Open/Closed gates do not affect prep time. Walls increase prep time, gates have nothing to do with it...
Q: If I leave the gates open and another persons army attacks me, do the open gates lower my defense? or does it not matter?

Only problem is you dont wanna trap a super duper strong army otherwise your fked =( especially if they can still merge in to that army to save it or add to it....
