They can scare the crap out of your enemies. They seem big armies and can make the other kd lose morale. Basically they are useful for intimidation and distraction. Cause the other kd might send their strongest armies to fight them off leaving the other side weakened and open for attack.

Most Gaia armies are left overs from OOP armies and they do come in handy for extra defence (minimal yes but at least you dont need to worry about upkeep..just feeding the lazy slobs).

Gai also useful if you break thru a blocker with your Nazzies. First city/armory you take past the blocker, start training lotso gai, no pezz needed. Gai armies can take out a sparsley defended core even at this late stage. Once you conquer the area, release them to dirt. Unless you like outrageous upkeep. Your choice. :P
And as Edd said, most people when they see a XX or XXX orc they get really nervous.
