Help me pick countries
18:51:43 Dec 13th 10 - Pirate Lewatha:

I've been considering doing volunteerswork  in third world countries for the past two years. The only thing stopping me from actually doing it, was my relationship. Recently I broke up and realized I wanted to do something useful, make a difference if you will. So I've decided to pick up on my old dream. I would like to go and teach children in a third world country the English language. However, I am not sure whether my English (being from Belgium) is good enough. So I'm not sure whether I should pick something other than teaching.

I also can not decide where to go, there are so many possibilities. There are:

Argentinia, Bolivia, Brasil, Cambodja, China, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Morocco, Mexico, Mongolia, Nepal, Peru, Senegal, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, Togo, Vietnam, South Africa.

I'd be wanting to go for anything from one to six months.

I'd like serious responses only.

19:12:32 Dec 13th 10 - Mr. Mamba Jamba:

Well I have to some volunteerswork for school. Need to get some money for a school in Ghana. Maybe you should take a look there.

19:58:07 Dec 13th 10 - Lord Reddragon Drunk:

Argentina! Good food and good people. Awfull politicians. Seriously Argentina its a good option,we have a lot of people that need help.

20:29:27 Dec 13th 10 - General Who:

Your english doesnt have to be perfect, the fact that you are willing to teach it and know it well enough to do so it what matters.

Could do some research and see which is needed more, or pick the most needed and randomly pick one of those.

One of the south/central america countries are in need (I talk to many there and know many there and they need help).

22:20:13 Dec 13th 10 - Mr. Reddragon Tipsy:

Some places are dangerous,The more in need are the african countries and some of asia like India or cambodia. South america has resources but not politicians or business people that want to share the awesome production we have with the poors. Example:Argentina has people hungry(we are 40 Millions) and we produce food for 300M people or maybe more. Brazil is changing that with some Hunger Zero plan, but they still have poor people too.

01:19:46 Dec 14th 10 - Mr. Korwyn:

Bolivia is a beautiful country and a bonus so are the women =) maybe help you forget about your girlfriend *grin*

01:53:52 Dec 14th 10 - Mr. Inception:

About where you should go, all I can say is to follow your heart. God will help you decide on where to go, cause He knows right where you will help the most. And while you're there, you could spread His word to the locals. No matter where you go, He is needed. Just pray about it and God will answer you, I promise =)

16:27:55 Dec 14th 10 - Mr. Finwe:

Gambia! Thats where all the people from my school went to build another school O.o

19:20:13 Dec 14th 10 - Mr. Bigger Willie Then You:

Tanzania, Thats where the people from my parents village go to help ^^
Or South-Africa, cause its the most awesome country in the world

12:45:58 Dec 18th 10 - Mr. Ufuk:

Lew has rape fantasies, that's the only explanation for that sorry list.

Seriously though, wouldn't it be better if you wanted to teach French? Being Belgian and all. If I were you I'd avoid all african countries, best place from your list is Argentina.

21:24:13 Dec 18th 10 - Mr. Bigger Willie Then You:

People in most of those countries speak french...

22:35:59 Dec 18th 10 - Mr. Antarctic Devil:

Lithuania please!

16:37:25 Feb 22nd 11 - Pirate Lewatha:

I'll let you all know, I chose Egypt. I'll be going to Luxor in July, I'll be teaching orphans english :)

19:47:19 Feb 22nd 11 - Judge Kobuskan:

00:52:53 Feb 23rd 11 - Mr. Leonardo Vinci:

sounds liek a bargain!

07:28:43 Feb 23rd 11 - VU Admin:

Aren't you a bit scared with all the stuff going on down there?

09:38:58 Feb 23rd 11 - Ms. Madame Curie:

eh.. wrong account...

09:39:33 Feb 23rd 11 - Pirate Lewatha:

Well the situation in Egypt has actually calmed down a bit, and I won't
be near Cairo or any of the cities with mass-riots. Luxor has actually
calmed down a bit and will be even more calm by the time I get there.. I
suppose I should get out of there before the next presidential
elections but that shouldn't be a problem since those will be hosted in
September or even later.

17:06:37 Feb 23rd 11 - Mr. Szasc:

Just keep your eyes on what's happening.  The entire region is sketchy at best.  Bahrain, UAB, Oman, Yeman....etc.etc. My understanding from a couple of people i know in different parts of the region is the problem is again not the people.  In most places, the people are wonderful - its the ruling class and potentially the military/police forces you have to be weary of.

Keep an eye on Saudi, Iran & Isreal as well.  There have been discussion about a Saudi uprising and Isreal is constantly looking to engage in conflict for self-preservation purposes.

be safe - its very rewarding, but can be dangerous.

02:17:52 Feb 26th 11 - Emperor Alexius Septimus Cidellus:

Good luck, Goddess of Cows! Your English actually seems better than most of the people that went to my old school (which isn't saying much), so don't worry about it.

18:32:19 Feb 26th 11 - Mr. Horus Left Testicle:

yup god of cows, emo girl (which was a multi btw), etc etc, i know all your previous names! :)

20:02:01 Feb 26th 11 - Emperor Alexius Septimus Cidellus:

No, the God of Cows was Might...the GODDESS of Cows was Hathor. ;)

16:11:42 Feb 27th 11 - Mr. Horus Left Testicle:

yeah whatever I knew that.

08:07:56 Feb 28th 11 - Emperor Alexius Septimus Cidellus:

You'd better...hell, I think a damn war was fought over it once!

23:39:20 Mar 10th 11 - Mr. Karl Marx:

I recommend going to Belgium, those taxes makes it a likely candidate ;)

03:34:33 Apr 4th 11 - Mr. Fizban:

I know some people that did it in Peru and I spent some time there. You can have anything ranging from the metropolitan to a step above roughing it up there. Shouldn't be too hard to get in, just have a good grasp on Spanish and if you're heading up in the mountains, then I suggest learning Quechua.

11:31:23 Apr 6th 11 - Mr. Abu Musab Alzarqawi:

I'd say Japan, if not you could always do as the friends of fizban

"I know some people that did it in Peru"

17:52:02 Apr 6th 11 - Mr. Tom Bombadildo:

so the options are:

1- give english lessons to peruvians

2- give swimming lessons to japanese?

01:32:42 Apr 16th 11 - Mr. Karl Marx:

Swimming lessons, or amputations of their extra arms?

05:23:35 Apr 16th 11 - Mr. Arkantos:

pickCosta Rica  they need it

14:31:42 Apr 16th 11 - Pirate Lewatha:

Already picked Egypt for this summer :P

I'm considering countries for next year though :D

Thanks for the advice all! =)

08:50:57 Jul 27th 11 - Pirate Lewatha:

I've safely returned from Egypt. It was a good choice and I'm happy I did it. I helped building a community center for the local population and animated+gave little english lessons to Egyptian children. It was an unforgettable experience. And you know what? I actually visited Abydos haha.

09:14:09 Jul 27th 11 - Emperor Alexius Septimus Cidellus:

Awesome! Glad you enjoyed yourself! Lots of stuff went down while you were gone.

11:59:22 Jul 27th 11 - Penguin (Mr. Penguin Wants Smoosh Smoosh):

I hit puberty! while you were gone :o

21:45:42 Jul 27th 11 - Zephyr (Ice Prince Keth The Tahl Ael):

We need english teachers in Panama. (;

21:57:31 Jul 27th 11 - The Wolflord (Mr. Whoami):

We need English teachers in America :)

22:01:36 Jul 27th 11 - Zephyr (Ice Prince Keth The Tahl Ael):

When you mean America, do you mean Central, South, North?

22:07:40 Jul 27th 11 - The Wolflord (Mr. Whoami):

All, but mostly North lol

22:14:27 Jul 27th 11 - Zephyr (Ice Prince Keth The Tahl Ael):

USA or Mexico?

Thw whole world should speak english.

23:19:36 Jul 27th 11 - The Wolflord (Mr. Whoami):

Either part. Apparently we all speak spanish here :)

23:51:06 Jul 27th 11 - Mr. Nostradamus:

the true north no hablan español es el francés lo suficientemente cerca

23:52:17 Jul 27th 11 - Zephyr (Ice Prince Keth The Tahl Ael):

Do you mean Canadians?

00:23:37 Jul 28th 11 - Mr. Nostradamus:

no I mean Greenland, we decided if Greenlandic is like Inuktitut then we must submit to learning French instead of Danish :p

05:29:48 Jul 28th 11 - Mr. Arthur Dent:

Wow Lew, it's cool that you did that.

If you want to do it again and were looking for more suggestions, my former German teacher spent a summer in Cambodia and in Vietnam, teaching people either German or English.  He thoroughly enjoyed it, and said he felt safer there than in the US, even in Cambodia.  He said there was a problem with people selling prostitution, but I doubt that would be as much of a problem for you, being a female.  And as you know, they all speak French there so that would be another benefit.  Obviously there are also cool places to visit, like everywhere.  Angkor Wat I hear is deteriorating fast, so it might be nice to visit there before it's too late ;)  Anyways, this is just my input, enjoy whatever you do.

15:18:56 Aug 2nd 11 - Swedish chef Brashen:

go and help all the poor in US maybe??

18:22:15 Aug 2nd 11 - Chris (Lady Nyx):

We don't help our own poor enough over here :/

Lew come help!? :P

12:45:05 Aug 5th 11 - Wilberforce (Lady Wilb Bride Sry Binh):

Lew, when you gonna come on skype and tell me how it went?

18:20:36 Aug 6th 11 - Mr. Invisible Pink Unicorn:

"He thoroughly enjoyed it, and said he felt safer there than in the US, even in Cambodia."

Isn't Cambodia's tourism motto something like "Spend a summer in the killing fields, it could very well be the last thing you ever see."? Or how about "Visit Cambodia! Come for the poverty, stay for the copses!"

06:53:45 Aug 11th 11 - Arthur Dent (Mr. Arthur Dent):

That used to be the truth.  The violence there is basically gone, compared to what it was.  My teacher felt safer at night there than in the US.

15:16:06 Oct 31st 11 - Pirate Lewatha:

I didn't actually ever come back to check on this thread after my last post.

It's funny you said that Arthur, next summer I'll either be going to Cambodia or Rwanda. Quite a coincidence :P

I'm actually more likely to go to Rwanda though. Seems exciting :)
