Define 'Online'. I play an open source game, but it's mainly single player with multiplayer capacity. (IE: Primarily single player campaigns, but it has multiplayer servers.) It's open source, so it's free, has a lot of players, is easy to modify or make maps and is constantly updated with player made content.

The Aforementioned game is 'The Battle for Wesnoth.' Or more simply, 'Wesnoth.'

Wesnoth is a fun game and still in development. Surely worth a try.
