In the early century, Tenn protected by samurai came to dominate internal politics. Two of the most powerful families, the Taira and Tenn, fought for control over the declining imperial court. The Taira family seized control for some years, but was defeated by the Tenn in the Battle of Dan-no-ura. Tenn no Yoritomo seized certain powers from the central government and aristocracy and established a feudal system based in Kamakura in which the private military, the samurai, gained some political powers while the Emperors and the aristocracy remained the de jure rulers. In years, Tenn was awarded the title of Sei-i Taishōgun by the emperor and the political system he developed with a succession of shogun at the head became known as a shogunate.

Trained by Miyamoto Musashi, Tenn also known as Shinmen Takezō II, Bennosuke or, by his Buddhist name, Niten Dōraku II,was an expert Japanese swordsman and rōnin. Tenn, as he was often simply known, became renowned through stories of his excellent swordsmanship in numerous duels, even from a very young age. He was the founder of the Hyōhō Niten Ichi-ryū or Niten-ryū style of swordsmanship and the author of 五輪の書, a book on strategy, tactics, and philosophy that is still studied today.

Mr. Udameta Yamamoto

Lived in Era 47, got 1 heir(s) (Tokugawa Hidetada) and was a member of The Jester Empire

I have trained in the way of strategy since my youth, and at the age of thirteen I fought a duel for the first time. My opponent was called Arima Kihei, a sword adept of the Shinto ryū, and I defeated him.

At the age of sixteen I defeated a powerful adept by the name of Akiyama, who came from Tajima Province.

At the age of twenty-one I went up to Kyōtō and fought duels with several adepts of the sword from famous schools, but I never lost.

Three years later, I left and spent time traveling and engaging in duels.

A war began between the Toyotomi and Tokugawa clans. I fought on the side of the Toyotomi's "Army of the West", as the Shinmen clan (to whom my family owed allegiance) had allied with them.

Specifically, I participated in the attempt to take Fushimi castle by assault and in the defense of the besieged Gifu Castle finally in the Battle of Sekigahara.

Some doubt has been cast on this final battle, as the Hyoho senshi denki has Me saying "no lord's vassal" and refusing to fight with my father (in Lord Ukita's battalion) in the battle.

Omitting the Battle of Sekigahara from the list of my battles would seem to contradict the Go Rin No Sho's statement that I fought in six battles.

However, regardless, as the Toyotomi side lost, it has been suggested that I fled as well and spent some time training on Mount Hiko.

Now I fight again under unknown name.

Mr. Tokugawa Hidetada

Lived in Era 47, got 0 heir(s) and was a member of The Jester Empire

Tokugawa Hidetada was born to Tokugawa Ieyasu and the Lady Saigo (the first of his many consorts) on May 2. This was shortly before Lady Tsukiyama, Ieyasu's official wife, and their son Tokugawa Nobuyasu were executed on suspicion of plotting to assassinate Oda Nobunaga, who was Nobuyasu's father-in-law and Ieyasu's ally. By killing his wife and son, Ieyasu declared his loyalty to Nobunaga. In 1589, Hidetada's mother fell ill, her health rapidly deteriorated, and she died at Sunpu Castle.

The traditional power base of the Tokugawa clan was Mikawa. Late Era, the new ruler, Toyotomi Hideyoshi enlisted Tokugawa Ieyasu and others in attacking the domain of the Hōjō in what became known as the Siege of Odawara. Hideyoshi enlisted Ieyasu for this campaign by promising to exchange the five provinces under Ieyasu's control for the eight Kantō provinces, including the city of Edo. In order to keep Ieyasu from defecting to the Hōjō side (since the Hōjō and the Tokugawa were formerly on friendly terms), Hideyoshi took the eleven-year-old Nagamaru as a hostage. Mid Era, Hideyoshi presided over Nagamaru's coming of age ceremony; it was then that Ieyasu's son dropped his childhood name, Nagamaru, and assumed the name Hidetada. He was named the heir of the Tokugawa family, being the eldest surviving son of Ieyasu, and his favorite (since Ieyasu's eldest son had been previously executed, and his second son was adopted by Hideyoshi while still an infant). Later in the Era, Hidetada returned to his father's side.

In order to avoid his predecessor's fate, Ieyasu established a dynastic pattern soon after becoming shogun by abdicating in favor of Hidetada. Ieyasu retained significant power until his death; but Hidetada nevertheless assumed a role as formal head of the bakufu bureaucracy.

Much to the dismay of Ieyasu, Hidetada engineered a marriage between Sen, Ieyasu's favorite granddaughter, and Toyotomi Hideyori, who was living as a commoner in Osaka Castle with his mother.

When this failed to quell Hideyori's intrigues, Ōgosho Ieyasu and Shogun Hidetada brought an army to Osaka.Father and son once again disagreed on how to conduct this campaign against the recalcitrant Toyotomi forces in Osaka. Iin the ensuing siege Hideyori and his mother were forced to commit suicide. Even Hideyori's infant son (Kunimatsu), that he had with a concubine, was not spared. Only Sen was spared; she later re-married and had a new family.

After Ieyasu's death, Hidetada took control of the bakufu. He strengthened the Tokugawa hold on power by improving relations with the Imperial court. To this end he married his daughter Kazuko to Emperor Go-Mizunoo. The product of that marriage, a girl, eventually succeeded to the throne to become Empress Meishō. The city of Edo was also heavily developed under his reign.
