What Type of Gamer are You
03:55:16 Sep 4th 22 - Lady Jasmina:

Over the years I tried many games, and I noticed my gameplay is always very different from what I play in VU. Here I am so called "tank" get a strong army, and attack enemy. Literally every other game I prefer a different style of play.

In my shooting game that I play on phone, I prefer a sniper, attack enemy from distance, run away, shoot, dodge, hide.
In Knights game I used to play, for example Dragon Age, my husband has that game so when I play I always prefer using the archer, shoot from distance, thought in that game you kinda have a team of 4 I believe, so I put knights in front and shoot from the back

Many years ago when I played those old Age of Empires games, I would always try to use tricks, get enemy to attack me and then try some maneuvers. I feel VU is the only game where I don't really use tricks, is it because its that kind of game? Like siege trap is one of the rare ways to use tricks here? Mostly its just walk your army to enemy and go head on...

How much of a tactical game is VU?
What kind of tactic do you prefer playing in other games?

I’d say VU has an incredible depth to tactics and strategy, though most of it is playing off of the enemy’s actions. I tend to have the same style as you for most games (attack from afar/from the shadows), and that’s why I feel so in tune with magic in VU. Being able to cast from range while safe behind allied armies is no different than acting as an archer behind allied soldiers.

The main difference between VU and the other games is the total reliance on others to make things work. And since a single “match” takes months instead of minutes/hours, the level of reliance is entirely different. Knowing the same is also true for the enemy, now you have an entirely different type of strategy and tactics than any other game can offer.

Ooh, nice idea for a topic! I have a pretty extensive background in RTS games and moba games. I am extremely tryhard at these games (and pretty much every game I play). I've always been someone who tries to "break the meta", as in, I see what is very popular and try to come up with my own solutions instead of just doing what everyone else does, and it's worked for me pretty well!
For example, in Starcraft 2 (where I played Protoss), Broodlord/Infestor comps were the meta for Zerg players back when I played and it was extremely overpowered. Instead of just following meta, I made my own build that isn't like anything what they'd see normally on the ladder. Basically, I'd allow them to scout double stargates so they think I'm going air, which would force a hydra timing from Zerg players 90% of the time... but by the time the Hydra timing arrived, I'd already have 1 collosus up (the counter to hydras) because I never intended to actually utilize the stargates in the first place. This concept is called "yomi layers" which is basically saying that I know he's countering me with X, but because I know that, I have already prepared for it with Y. I utilize this concept a lot in my style of gaming. You can read more about it and other concepts like that here (https://www.sirlin.net/ptw-book/7-spies-of-the-mind).

I'd highly recommend reading this entire book if you're a gamer. It will improve your skill. It's quite short and it's free, and written by one of the best fighting game players of all time who went on to become educated at MIT https://www.sirlin.net/ptw

When I play hockey video games I always get charging penalties, when I tried Godus I was drawn to Finger of God,  Meteor strike.  Squish my people lol. Mario Kart … was usually aggressive play style. Most other war games (can’t remember them all, too many) I get bored with fast.

VU and the original Legend of Zelda are really the only games that don’t/didn’t bore me. Although Zelda is nostalgic, haven’t played it in years (moved and gave my NES away) but I would if I had the equipment and game cartridge again. Dungeon fights were fun. Have tried the newer versions but meh not the same. Can’t say I’m aggressive doing puzzle games. So I guess those don’t bore me either.

When I first started I liked The Count and Voodoo Castle.  Text based. VIC-20 then C64. Yes I’m that old lol. Might be why I liked VU, instead of drawing maps to remember the path VU made me do math and strategy.

Over the years I went through phases.

NES first, I liked shooters a lot
Then comp gaming, mostly RTS. FPS were coming up at the same time, but I never got into them. I played everything from AoE to Starcraft to Warcraft 1-3.

I got into the original DOTA pretty hard, then this browser game called TagPro. Only mobile game was Clash Royale, which I enjoyed.

Running in the background for 20 years though was this stupid game.

I agree with Percy here, VU had a lot of tactics involved, even if its just to have everyone attack at same time and have everyone attack same target area.

In other games, depends on what it is, ir game had a specific task to follow, then you can’t really do something else. Thats why I prefer games that have open world and side missions. I would actually like a sugg of a game with open map that does not force you on task and allows you to do what ever you want. Not newest ones that require a space ship to run.

I started gaming with boards, Risk, Chess. Led to Axis and Allies.

I enjoy small unit tactics. Flanking, false feints..I rarely have the patience to build just one big army.
I also have played D&D/Pathfinder since the 80's.
For screen games,  Sega had "Pacific Theatre of Operations" and "Centurion" were favs.
Desktop, my favorite strategy game ever, Medieval-Total War.
I like games with infrastructure. Having to build an economy and not just troops. Developing sciences, etc...
VU checks a lot of those boxes.

I also really like killing Nazi zombies for straight shoot em ups.

Ghost Recon is cool for a more realistic feel. I like games that are realistic. Not just running around killing shit and hitting reset or continue. Leroy Jenkins!!! Lol
 Sneakiness and stealth.
