Help me pick countries | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|
I've been considering doing volunteerswork in third world countries for the past two years. The only thing stopping me from actually doing it, was my relationship. Recently I broke up and realized I wanted to do something useful, make a difference if you will. So I've decided to pick up on my old dream. I would like to go and teach children in a third world country the English language. However, I am not sure whether my English (being from Belgium) is good enough. So I'm not sure whether I should pick something other than teaching. | ||||
Well I have to some volunteerswork for school. Need to get some money for a school in Ghana. Maybe you should take a look there. | ||||
Argentina! Good food and good people. Awfull politicians. Seriously Argentina its a good option,we have a lot of people that need help. | ||||
Your english doesnt have to be perfect, the fact that you are willing to teach it and know it well enough to do so it what matters. | ||||
Some places are dangerous,The more in need are the african countries and some of asia like India or cambodia. South america has resources but not politicians or business people that want to share the awesome production we have with the poors. Example:Argentina has people hungry(we are 40 Millions) and we produce food for 300M people or maybe more. Brazil is changing that with some Hunger Zero plan,but they still have poor people too. | ||||
Bolivia is a beautiful country and a bonus so are the women =) maybe help you forget about your girlfriend *grin* | ||||
About where you should go, all I can say is to follow your heart. God will help you decide on where to go, cause He knows right where you will help the most. And while you're there, you could spread His word to the locals. No matter where you go, He is needed. Just pray about it and God will answer you, I promise =) | ||||
Gambia! Thats where all the people from my school went to build another school O.o | ||||
Tanzania, Thats where the people from my parents village go to help ^^ | ||||
Lew has rape fantasies, that's the only explanation for that sorry list. Seriously though, wouldn't it be better if you wanted to teach French? Being Belgian and all. If I were you I'd avoid all african countries, best place from your list is Argentina. | ||||
People in most of those countries speak french... | ||||
Lithuania please! | ||||
I'll let you all know, I chose Egypt. I'll be going to Luxor in July, I'll be teaching orphans english :) | ||||
Better paint your hear black, else you get sold for 2 camels and a goat ;)
| ||||
sounds liek a bargain! | ||||
Aren't you a bit scared with all the stuff going on down there? | ||||
eh.. wrong account... | ||||
Well the situation in Egypt has actually calmed down a bit, and I won't | ||||
Just keep your eyes on what's happening. The entire region is sketchy at best. Bahrain, UAB, Oman, Yeman....etc.etc. My understanding from a couple of people i know in different parts of the region is the problem is again not the people. In most places, the people are wonderful - its the ruling class and potentially the military/police forces you have to be weary of. | ||||
Good luck, Goddess of Cows! Your English actually seems better than most of the people that went to my old school (which isn't saying much), so don't worry about it. | ||||
yup god of cows, emo girl (which was a multi btw), etc etc, i know all your previous names! :) | ||||
No, the God of Cows was Might...the GODDESS of Cows was Hathor. ;) | ||||
yeah whatever I knew that. | ||||
You'd better...hell, I think a damn war was fought over it once! | ||||
I recommend going to Belgium, those taxes makes it a likely candidate ;) | ||||
I know some people that did it in Peru and I spent some time there. You can have anything ranging from the metropolitan to a step above roughing it up there. Shouldn't be too hard to get in, just have a good grasp on Spanish and if you're heading up in the mountains, then I suggest learning Quechua. | ||||
I'd say Japan, if not you could always do as the friends of fizban | ||||
so the options are: | ||||
Swimming lessons, or amputations of their extra arms? | ||||
pickCosta Rica they need it | ||||
Already picked Egypt for this summer :P | ||||
I've safely returned from Egypt. It was a good choice and I'm happy I did it. I helped building a community center for the local population and animated+gave little english lessons to Egyptian children. It was an unforgettable experience. And you know what? I actually visited Abydos haha. | ||||
Awesome! Glad you enjoyed yourself! Lots of stuff went down while you were gone. | ||||
I hit puberty! while you were gone :o | ||||
We need english teachers in Panama. (; | ||||
We need English teachers in America :) | ||||
When you mean America, do you mean Central, South, North? | ||||
All, but mostly North lol | ||||
USA or Mexico? | ||||
Either part. Apparently we all speak spanish here :) | ||||
the true north no hablan español es el francés lo suficientemente cerca | ||||
Do you mean Canadians? | ||||
no I mean Greenland, we decided if Greenlandic is like Inuktitut then we must submit to learning French instead of Danish :p | ||||
Wow Lew, it's cool that you did that. If you want to do it again and were looking for more suggestions, my former German teacher spent a summer in Cambodia and in Vietnam, teaching people either German or English. He thoroughly enjoyed it, and said he felt safer there than in the US, even in Cambodia. He said there was a problem with people selling prostitution, but I doubt that would be as much of a problem for you, being a female. And as you know, they all speak French there so that would be another benefit. Obviously there are also cool places to visit, like everywhere. Angkor Wat I hear is deteriorating fast, so it might be nice to visit there before it's too late ;) Anyways, this is just my input, enjoy whatever you do. | ||||
go and help all the poor in US maybe?? | ||||
We don't help our own poor enough over here :/ | ||||
Lew, when you gonna come on skype and tell me how it went? | ||||
"He thoroughly enjoyed it, and said he felt safer there than in the US, even in Cambodia." | ||||
That used to be the truth. The violence there is basically gone, compared to what it was. My teacher felt safer at night there than in the US. | ||||
I didn't actually ever come back to check on this thread after my last post. It's funny you said that Arthur, next summer I'll either be going to Cambodia or Rwanda. Quite a coincidence :P I'm actually more likely to go to Rwanda though. Seems exciting :) | ||||
