Operation: Dux Letum

Erus sat in his old leather armchair in his small house. Not one noise penetrated the steel wall of silence. Erus was looking out his window at the darkness outside, it was midnight, but he could not sleep, his dreams would not let him. It had been three years since the Farillian War, he felt no remorse for the lives he had ended, but still his dreams haunted him. He wondered why. Erus finally snapped out of his trance as a knock came to the door. He rose from his chair and answered the call. Standing in the doorway was Major Nullus.

"Major, it's been a long time", said Erus.

"That it has, may I come in?" asked Nullus.

"Of course", said Erus as he stepped aside.

Nullus entered the home, looked around, and found the leather armchair, he took a seat.

"This is not a social visit I'm afraid. The Emperor has asked that I get a team of three together for a mission. I have two, Xarxes and Kevis, but I need one more. You were my best", said Nullus.

"What about Ernie?" asked Erus.

"He had disappeared", said Nullus.

"Corvus?" asked Erus.

"He died three months ago in Gobon", said Nullus.

"Corvus is dead?" asked Erus.

"Arrow to the throat", said Nullus.

Erus walked to the window and punched the wall.

"I accept the mission", said Erus, "But only if it is my last."

"The Emperor promises that it will be our last", said Nullus, "Then we can finally enjoy life."

"I hope so Major, I hope so", said Erus, "Let me prepare, where will we meet?"

"I am staying at the Resdyn Inn, let us meet there", said Nullus.

"Alright sir", said Erus.

Nullus walked to the door and left. Erus walked over to a small chest at the foot of his bed and grabbed a crossbow, a steel dagger with a gem in the pommel, and a longsword. Erus put on his leather armor, he then buckled his longsword. He had his dagger's scabbard on his left thigh. The crossbow was then slung across his lower back. Ready, Erus walked towards the inn...

Major Nullus stood at the front of a small room in Fort Honor, Erus, Kevis, and Xarxes sat in front of him.

"This mission is from the King himself, it is of the greatest importance. The Maerellian Empire is moblizing their troops, probably preparing for war. Their Emperor, Jaegar Maerna, is more of a barbarian than a civilized politician. He wants to conquer Belivia, and if he isn't stopped, the whole continent. His brother, Horin contacted King Belivus with a deal. If Jaegar is killed, then Horin will take power. To counter any coups that could occur, he also wants General Un Fareth killed. King Belivus also asks that a certain map is stolen, it is a detailed map of the Heragian mountain chain, in case Horin doesn't meet his end of the bargain. The Heragian mountain chain seperates Maerellia and Belivia. If a war broke out we'd need the maps to have a hope of survival. Understood?" asked Nullus.

"Yes sir", said the three men.

"Good, we've got a long trip followed by a hard mission ahead of us. Rest well tonight", said Nullus before leaving the room.

This isn't dead, it's just sleeping until I get back. I have a plot set out for around four more stories based in this world for Validus Erus!

Erus walked down to the barracks and layed down. He began thinking of the day's events. Ernie was missing, Corvus was dead, and he was being called on his last mission. He knew that it wouldn't be his last, the King never kept his promises.

Erus woke early, it would take three days to reach the mountains, and another three to get through them. He kept his grandfather's dagger as always, and brought his crossbow and his longsword. Kevis was armed with a longsword and Nullus carried a bow and a shortsword, Xarxes held a longsword as always, but also carried a shortbow. They took four Belivian horses from the stables and began their long journey to Maerellia.

They passed through forests, over hills, and through valleys before finally reaching the Heragian mountains. They were massive, over five thousand feet in height, Nullus let out a laugh.
"Tall barriers! Luckily there's a cave they don't know about! A scout discovered it a year or so ago," said Nullus.
The four men walked into the dark cavern, Nullus taking a premade torch from his pack and lighting it with a tinderbox. With new light they continued...
