Gaius had just received another six months of leave, and he decided to use it to improve his administration ability. His son, Caius, was walking, running, and talking. Quintus was walking and running. Severus was, amazingly, walking and running at only a year old. He also never seemed to cry, and always looked quite serious. Althea was pleased with the villa, and was happy to be living away from Fort Marcus and Cidellus's legions. Gaius was glad that he was able to see them for six months straight, but he had to return to Fort Marcus as soon as his class was over. He missed his family greatly, but it would have been selfish to keep them there. Name: Sir Gaius Cidellus Quintus Cidellus Severus Cidellus
Tiberius took 6 months worth of leave to go off to study about veteran administration. By the time he returned he was a much wiser man and was already giving thought as to what he'd do after retiring from the legion.

[[OOC: This'll be fun. I've been on Tybee all week without internets. Awesome. At least I got back before the war started. Counting posts, I'm coming up with 6 days.]] Post Description Doran had been a legionaire for years now and finally had some time off. A friend of his who owned a library had offered to teach him reading in exchange for helping out around the library, so he did that over his leave until he finally could stare down at the squiggles on the page and make words of them. He continued training in the ways of the sword and shield until they felt like extentions of his body, and he became one of the best swordsmen in his legion. Despite this, he didn't feel like he was really helping people like he set out to do. "At least," he muttered to himself one night, "I'll be ready if I'm ever needed." *edit: I didn't post for today. This one is just to catch up. I'm going to post for today this evening once I know whether there's going to be a war.
[[OOC: Posting the start of the war later. Don't worry, and don't post for Monday (today) yet. =D]] *Saturday* Gaius Cidellus now took his duties as a general very seriously, for it was not the job of a commander to be light-handed and kind. He was harsh and strong, as was required to keep the many strong and brave men disciplined. He missed his wife and children as always, young Caius would be learning to read soon. Althea would have to teach him. Name: Sir Gaius Cidellus Quintus Cidellus Severus Cidellus
*Sunday* All was peaceful in Serillia, as always, under the wise rule of Emperor Aulus III. Not much had been expected of him, even though he had been the son of one of the greatest Emperors to ever rule, but he had evolved into a great man in his own right during the war. Gaius was proud to call the man his friend, and not just because Aulus was his liege. Caius was learning to read, Gaius was able to visit them once a week. There were quite a few advantages to having your family a short ride away. Name: Sir Gaius Cidellus Quintus Cidellus Severus Cidellus
The war started with lightning speed as a massive invasion from the north landed at Zennith, crushing the garrisons before Serillia even had time to react. They pillaged everything of value, and burnt everything else. They were soon identified as the Orconians, also known as orcs. The total invasion force consisted of around 50,000 orcs. Their cavalry consisted of orcs riding enormous lizards, and the orcs themselves were usually 7-8 feet in height. The Orconians were led by the fearsome Warlord Balek Mel-Marak, who was known to ride a terrible flying demon into battle. The Serillians had numbers, but the orcs were built for war and fighting. Their morale was impossible to break, and their their generals were all fit for command. Emperor Aulus III appeared strong and fearless as he called his legions for battle. Within four weeks, he had the legions of the Imperial Province, Porus, Mordoon, Mardon, and Fenis at his command, with the legions of Peninsulara and Guana on their way. The others would be used to guard the unconquered lands as the Emperor led his Empire through the second war of his reign. *** The beginning of the war went bad for the Serillians, but Emperor Aulus managed to avoid a decisive defeat. Despite his ability and the ability of his Generals, he knew he would be unable to defeat the Orcs in an open battle. As such, he launched what he called a "Guerilla War" against the Orcs, named after the famous lieutenant of Sarvalai: Guerius. They would disrupt Orconian supply lines and ambush stray raiding parties, but they would never engage an army in open battle. They were not ready, they needed to weaken their enemy first. Just when Tiberius was thinking of taking leave to spend some time with his family war broke upon Serillia and his was amogst the first legions to be summoned to war. He heard reports from fleeing commanders from Zenith about the orcs battle prowess and inability of the Serillian legionnaires to engage them in open battle. Keeping that in mind he dispatched his generals with strict orders to not engage them in an open fight as his emperor had reiterated. Small detachments of his legion would catch the enemy off huard in wooded or hilly areas and utterly decimate them before retreating. However Tiberius was angered by the rash actions of some new young centurions who eager for glory had engaged the orcs in open battle, they had suffered heavy casualties but were able to withdraw as the orcs didn't have their cavalry nearby and Tiberius's legate did. He had had the commander stripped of command and given 20 lashes. It burnt him to do so but he knew that discipline had to be maintained at all costs after the demoralising loss of the Zenith legions, especially against an enemy as skilled and determined as the orconians. The orcs had been roaming around Zennith, Jaskol, Certin, and Yorton. There had been no rape, it seemed that they had that much honor. However, they had murdered, they had pillaged, and they were currently very close to Seris. Gaius had made arrangements for Althea to live with her family in the west until the war was over, so she was in no harm. Emperor Aulus was holding the war effort together, and the guerilla tactics were working well. It wasn't stopping the orcs, but it was weakening them. They had gotten the total Orconian force down to around 43,000 in the last six months, while the Serillians had only lost around a thousand men. It wasn't nearly enough for Aulus to risk an open battle, but it was helping the Serillian morale greatly. [[Name: Sir Gaius Cidellus Quintus Cidellus Severus Cidellus

remaining. ----------------------- War. It had been a long time since Jarnas had led his troops in a fight. His initial skirmishes proved what he had long said, his men needed longer weapons, a focus on engaging the enemy at a distance. Lacking these, Jarnas engaged in the light warfare tactics encouraged by the Emperor with the IV legion, while the VIII and XV legions drilled in mini-formation fighting, splitting into sub-groups of five to engage and destroy a much larger opponent. One, the one best drilled in the use of the shield, would engage the opponent while the other two struck hard and fast at the back of the legs then the torso/head. The other two would screen the three killers, keeping other orcs off their back. At the first meeting of command staff, Jarnas outlined his drilling procedures. These, he suggested, would greatly increase the combat effectiveness of their forces in minor battles. He stressed though that they would not be effective in a major engagement. As such, he strongly requested that 12 foot reinforced pikes be issued to the troops, and all available legions be trained in their usage. The pikes, he suggested, would consist of a 10-foot wooden shaft, reinforced with two bands of iron, a two foot steel blade (sharpened on both sides so that it could be used to slash in a pinch, but mainly so that an orc could not safely brush it aside) and a metal counterweight at the base roughly equivalent to the weight of the blade. He suggested that every second legionnaire be equipped with this pike. In this manner, a front of steel could be presented to the Orc forces while not leaving the pikemen vulnerable to ranged fire or an orc who breached the lines. Normal legionnaires would use their sword and shield to engage such a problem, while the pikemen would keep their distance from the orcs. This would in turn keep the swordsmen safe, as the pikemen would strike at any orcs who attacked a seemingly vulnerable swordsman.
Emperor Aulus approved of the reforms suggested by General Insurgo, but ordered that Insurgo try his new drills with a smaller group rather than the whole legions to see that it would work. If it did work, he would approve the training for all of Insurgo's legions, and possibly other legions in the army as well.

Tiberius had begun to hear reports about pikes being introduced in some legions. It was something that horrified him, Serillian legionnaires had been raised precisely because the use of pikes and spears as the central weapon in armies had led nearly all the ancient forces to disaster. That far he heard that it was to be used only for small engagements. He hoped that the emperor would revert that decision as it would only lead to the slaughter of many good men. Their guerrila tactics were best suited to hilly, rugged and forested areas, places where the use of long pikes was near impossible. The very reason behind the creation of legionnaires had been the lack of mobility offered by their earlier long spear centric formations. A fact that their enemy made good use of to defeat them. Tiberius was however not averse to the idea of creation of such small bodies to act as protecting units for an army's flank in large scale open battles. However using them as the centre and main troops in the legion was something that Tiberius was not prepared to accept. While these tactics were almost guaranteed to fail each and every time in small engagements, a single penetration by the large and fierce orcs in a large scale battle with this formation in effect would result in disaster as half the men would be with spears and unable to defend themselves. His final point of concern as he stated in a letter to the Emperor was that introduction of spear wielding troops was directly against the Emperor's well thought out strategy of weakening the enemy by waging guerrila warfare, somthing that had never in history of man been done by large or small scale use of spear wielding troops. Tiberius however was fully content in the Emperor's decision for the time being as he realized fully well that the Emperor was giving his generals some time to experiment and would after early results decide whether or not their use would be continued. Tiberius merely hoped to hasten his decision before more men lost their lives. [[OOC: I guess we'll be initiating the Aulan Reforms. XD]] Gaius heard of General Termainius's complaints about Insurgo's reforms and decided to begin thinking of revisions to avoid a possible complaint. He suggested that the auxiliaries be armed with a six-foot thrusting spear, a longer sword for hand-to-hand combat, and an oval shield. The thrusting spear would be cheaper to produce, would be comfortable in tight formations. Their oval shield would distinguish them from legionnaires and make it easier for a spear-thrust. The legionnaires, on the other hand, would keep their square shields. However, he also suggested that the legions adopt the use of javelins for the legionnaires to soften up the enemy before a charge. He also realized that the horsemen of the legion had nothing aiding them in staying on their saddle, and suggested rings to put their feet through. After almost two weeks of consulting with the cavalry, he devised something he called a stirrup and suggested that it be added to the saddle of every horseman. He believed that his addition to the reforms would help, but he would also wait for input by General Insurgo, General Termainius, General Bacardus, and the other Generals. The Emperor, as a great tactician in his own right, would probably have something to say as well.

Mathematics ----------------------- With the Emperor's approval, Jarnas instituted the second-man pike into the I,II,III centuries of the VIII Legion. ------------------- MEETING OF HIGH COMMAND ------------------ Jarnas detailed his success with the pikes, who had gone on to win a further six such engagements. With the varied opinions of the generals however, the discussion was lively. Jarnas' suggestion was that half of the centuries be re-fitted with the full length pikes for major-combat duties. The other half should be outfitted with lighter equipment, including javelins, swords, bows and the like. This would allow for a skirmisher type force to engage and blood the enemy, then retreat behind the wall of pikes and shields, harassing the enemy from a point of safety. However, when he heard of the idea of these "Stirrups", Jarnas had a brilliant idea; Horse skirmishers. His suggestion was to equip the cavalry with bows and javelins, so that they may engage the enemy from a distance, harassing them while being individually unattainable. {As far as history is concerned, you saw first the Spear-armed hoplites of Greece crushing the more numerous but lighter Persian forces, then the pike-armed soldiers of Alexander crush all those before him. Better formation and ranged fighters from Rome overwhelmed a weaker Greece, a nation no longer strong militarily. Long-spears and pikes then lapsed out of use until the 14th/15th centuries when the superiority of the pole-arm was finally re-realized. Troops, fighting with pikes/long-halberds in solid formations crushed all that opposed. The shield/sword was became obsolete. Pikemen were only outdated by the advent of the bayonet, which made musket-armed soldiers mini-pikes. Only when every soldier had a spear that could also shoot, was the pike no longer worthwhile.
[[OOC: The phalanx of Greece and Macedonia was almost invincible from the front. However, when flanked or assaulted from the rear they could not move fast enough to face the enemies. The Roman formations were flexible and adaptable, which is what one needs when being attacked by super-soldiers from Orconia. And the orcs are not that stupid, they would never charge into a line of pikes. They would launch a small frontal distraction assault while another force flanked you. =P]]
{Hence the two rivers; The pikes were retracted until the last possible moment, using concealment to prevent the Orcs from realizing that pikes were in use until they had already committed. Those shortcomings of the Phalanx/Macedonion formations are why I am adopting a more "Tercio" approach, adding in more flexible swordsmen/light troops to the formation. Naturally, any such formation has weaknesses and I will not be able to be in unflankable positions at all times. Which is why I'm not the only one on the High Command! :P }
[[OOC: I don't want to throw in 15th century pike tactics when this game is meant to be starting with Roman tactics. We have to slowly evolve, not have some random spear-general come and magically suggest new spear tactics while never having used spear tactics or seen them in any way before. You were trained in Romanesque tactics, so you would know best how to evolve those Romanesque tactics into maybe...late Romanesque tactics. XD]]
{Yes, I am evolving Romanesque tactics to counter a specific threat. Here, the threat is an army that is essentially composed of light cavalry (large Orcs) with Heavy cavalry thrown in, and I am introducing a new style of weapon/tactic to deal with this specific threat. It is romanesque, with a focus on formations and flexible, tactical combat. It is a matter of certain pressure evoking a certain response; our soldiers lack of reach and individual mass is causing us to lose horrifically in open battles. Therefore, you have three options to deal with this problem, extend reach (pikes/spears) engage from distance (focus on archer corps/javelins) or increase mass (shift focus to mounted troops to counter the enemy). Jarnas is suggesting that we implement the first of these reforms, with elements of the second and third. Thrown in for leavening. Of course, if you think it's too advanced, I can scale back or it can be rejected. (Note: It's not a purely 15th/16th century tactic, as it lacks the heavy arquebus contingent of a true Pike and Shot formation. This means that it is still very vulnerable to enemy light troops.)}
[[OOC: Perhaps the auxiliaries would become the pikemen while the legionnaires would use the six-and-a-half foot spear and a longer sword.]]
{How's about you suggest it during the meeting of High Command? XD}
[[OOC: I really don't know...]] General Cidellus suggested that the auxiliaries be armed with pikes, and the legionnaires would use a six-and-a-half foot spear. The legionnaires would also be armed with a longer sword to improve their reach against the orcs. Such great reforms could not be the product of one man, and it would take the work of Aulus's High Command and Emperor Aulus himself to make them perfect.
Tiberius was listening to the proposals wide eyed with a look of shock on his face. Whilst he made it a point to ask the other Generals if they actually thought that they would be willing to reform the entire weapon production system of Serrilia, a process that in itself would take years. His main point was if they expected to find themselves such wonderfully ideal terrain everytime that they went to battle and more so did they expet the highly clever orcs to not adapt to these unflexible tactics. A final yet simple point that he threw in was how on *Earth*(What's the name of this planet?) did they expect to counter massed enemy archer fire which would obliterate their unprotected ranks. The moment enemy arrows caused the pikes to fall, the enemy orcs would charge the legionnaires who would be having low numbers due to half being pikemen. Even as the reinforcing wave of Serillian troops would be unsuccesfully sent in the enemy cavalry would sweep in on those plain grounds, terrify the legionnaires as always and charge to victory.

[[OOC: This has gone on for long enough. XD The current formations and equipment are working fine, so Emperor Aulus will not risk anything by changing them. Stirrups have no downside (other than production), so Emperor Aulus will introduce them to the cavalry. That's the only thing gained. After the war, we might be able to have an MSN or IRC High Command meet, as doing it on the forums sucks. >>]] Gaius pointed out that the Orconians lacked any significant archer formations or discipline, as the Orconians believed fighting from afar to be a cowardly act. However, he did admit that the reformation of the weapons production of Serillia would be near impossible in the current state of things. He also admitted that they would find themselves fighting in all terrains, not just desirable ones. He advised that Emperor Aulus halt the reforms until the end of the war, as the men would be both training for new weapons AND fighting a superior opponent, which would both tax morale and would drain the coffers. Emperor Aulus, after many hours of debate, finally reached a conclusion. He would delay the reformation of the Imperial military until the end of the war. The current formations and equipment were holding up just fine against the orcs, but the stirrups would be a welcome addition. That was the only thing gained from the meeting of High Command. ********************************** Gaius Cidellus, glad that the meeting was over, returned to his legions and continued directing his part of the guerilla war against the Orconians. The Battle of Hardow had been a crushing defeat for the Orconians, and the remaining orcs were being hunted and killed with ease. The battle itself had been long and brutal, as even with low numbers the orcs were capable of great feats of violence. However, Emperor Aulus had been able to maintain morale, and as a result the battle, and the war, was won. Gaius Cidellus returned back to Seris with his legions with great praise, and triumphs were announced for several Generals of the Orconian War, along with the Emperor. Gaius was pleased, but he was even more pleased that his family would be able to return home. He was proud of his legions for their bravery and loyalty during the war, and he praised them in a speech he gave upon their return to Fort Marcus. Tiberius returned to Mardem triumphant. He however was swift to notice that certain Senators were more than usually warm in their welcoming of him. Tiberius felt something close to disgust, he hadn't been a Lord for 2 years and already the senators were sucking up to him, trying to win him over to their side. Tiberius gave orders to this second in command to ensure that no man of nobility save the Duke himself should meet him whilst he enjoyed a few well earned months of rest with his family.
