The younger son of Gurath the Second, thought to be lost in the fires of his father's kingdom, actually escaped the fighting and managed to move to a new area. Making a peaceful existence in a small town, he lived the rest of his life happily with his newfound wife and existance.
He named his son Gurath IV, in honor of his father. As the youngest son prepared his final affairs, he told the story of his lineage to his son. Gurath IV declared that he would one day restore the name of Gurath to the wise and kind leaders of history.
Gurath IV works to this day to restore the dwarven honor, build cities to bring prosperity, and help his fellow man. He joined a small band of nobles who were unfamiliar with the surroundings, who called themselves the Umbrella Corp. He decided it was his duty to help them, and in doing so restore the famous kindness associated with the Gurath name.
So he did, becoming one of the most respected rulers in the land. He fought off many foes and assisted his allies while still keeping the needs of his people foremost in his thoughts and actions.
When all was said and done, and Armagaddon struck the world, he was #16 In Mantrax, #4 in the North, and #1 in UC.
He had the #1 most powerful city in the world, and for a short while graced the top 10 most powerful armies.

After a long line of assasinations of both real and fake heirs to the Gurath name, Lord Gurath the Fifth made his presence known in Nirvana. Every trace of his empire in Mantrax had been burned away, and Fantasia proved to be an unsafe refuge for the exiled lord. And so, an old friend invited him into the alliance of the Dark Riders. Little did he know how accurate that name would be.
Befriended by the Orcs, he took a role of leadership among the Nazgul. So he rode, inflicting pain and misery upon those who crossed his path. Gurath V and his winged host swooped down faster than night could fall and crushed the inhabitants of a village. Only his fancy determined whether, when the morning came, the village would still be standing or the land would be barren as the hearts of his foes.
The Nazgul, proud and heroic, banded together in small groups of less than 50, and terrorized their foes, holding off armies of thousands, and fighting to the last man when encountering the corrupted among their kin. Ironic how he turned his Nazgul against the legion of the burning eye, purifying them of the unholy control the evil lord had. With the elven queen Lady Rhianna's assistance, he defended his lands against the foes antagonized by his heroic knights. Though he had several allies through the ages, none were as close a friend as the Lady Rhianna. Though none can say for sure what conversations they had in their prosperous lands, it was certain that his family would forever befriend hers.
As Gurath V grew old, he realized he could not keep his honorable Nazgul bound to him any longer. As the strongest ruler in the land, he suited up one last time, and charged forth into battle, glowing with magical protection and leading his army of honorable warriors to their final momentous struggle against the corruption that had bound them for so long. Regardless of the outcome of the battle, it was evident that this battle would be both one to remember, and an epic climax to the legendary life of Gurath V.
His children, guarded by his most treasured Nazgul, would move on to another world, to write their own story on the pages of history.

The Nazgul, loyal beyond life itself, were torn between moving the children to safety and fighting among their brethren against their common foes. Gurath V was a legendary man, whose leadership was evident to any who saw him. What was most evident to those who served him was that he was a better man than any they had ever seen, and yet retained his compassion. This was never more true than to his children. His two sons and daughter looked up to him as any father would wish, and prayed to grow up to be just like him. The nazgul ordered to guard his children were moved by his empassioned plea, and knew that they could stay with their brethren no longer. They had been selected, personally, as servants of that great man, to become the stewards of that noble family. Their age old hatred of the elves was completely subdued by the Lady Rhianna and her children, which were as precious to her as they were to Gurath. Therefore, abandoning their homeland, the elite guard took the skies, flying far away. After many months of travel, they landed on a world called Mantrax. The children asked if it was the same Mantrax their grandfather had ruled in, but it was obvious to the bodyguards that it was not. This was a land that had been scarred by war, burned by the flames of purgatory itself, and was now a battlefield for corrupt rulers seeking to spread their oppression.
Suddenly, they came under attack! Arrows flew through the air as humans and elves spotted the group from their encampments. Great bolts flew through the air as trollish ballista fired upon them where the brutes' boulders would not reach. From above, hordes of twisted gargoyles flew down upon them. As they grew closer, the Nazgul could see that they were not gargoyles at all, but twisted aberrations of their race, horribly mutated and abused forms of their own kind. Seeing that they were so horribly outnumbered, and exhausted from their lengthy journey, they realized that they could not outrun these threats, and they could not fight without endangering the children. They flew as fast as they could to escape the projectiles and the battle. The children were crying with fear, and those who were carrying the children attempted to reassure them. They told the kids, "You must be strong. Your father would want you to be strong in the face of danger. You will be safe as long as you are with us, we gave him our word. We will survive."
The children clung tightly to the steeds as they flew, trying to escape the danger. Suddenly, looming ahead, a vast horde of the corrupted beasts could be seen flying towards them. Beneath the beasts was a larger company of humans, attempting to fire down the demons. The band attempted to evade detection by altering their course, but it was too late. A few hundred devils had broken off from the horde and was now swooping towards them. With them, the arrows of a thousand soldiers were now pointed at what they saw as a new threat.
Of the company of 50 Nazgul that had set off on the journey, 30 set off to engage the demons, while the remaining 20 swooped down and off to the side, seeking to hide in a forest that appeared to have been relatively untouched by the battlefield that scarred the world around them. The children, remembering the strength of their father and the silent grace of their mother, turned with solemn faces towards this new threat. Fifty of the twisted monsters had evaded the battle begun by the 30 who had broken off and were now diving towards the fleeing company.
The children were grateful that their parents had taught them the ways of war so that they might avoid disaster should they ever find themselves mid-battle. The eldest, named after his father, Gurath VI, had ironically enough been closest to his mother, and learned the ways of the elven people. It was due to this that he was wisest to the ways of nature and the ancient lore of the world. He had begun to learn basic spellcasting from Rhianna and how to best compose himself during battle from Gurath V. When the beasts came upon him, he charged up the fiercest fireball he could muster, and launched it at the beast, striking it out of the sky, though it was probably not sufficient to kill the monster.
The daughter, Rhiannia, although named after her mother, was always Gurath V's favorite. He spent many long nights teaching her the ways of weaponry, fighting techniques, and telling her stories of the battles he had fought. She tried to get similar information out of her mother, but Rhianna would try and guide her towards the beauty of the elven arts over the cruel world of war that she had experienced. She eventually bowed down and taugher her daughter of elvish military, for she could not bear to see her child distraught or unhappy, but was disturbed every time she thought of her precious child in battle. She always thought to herself that Rhiannia's courage was foolish, and would some day get her hurt.
Her battle composure helped her on this day, as she drew her bow and steadied it at the fearsome beasts that roared all around. While this was not the fun target practice she had done with her father, her aim was as true now as it was then, bolstered by the adrenaline shooting through her when she realized the peril they were in. Arrow after arrow, she sent her bolts through the beasts' vital points, necks and torsos, with accuracy and precision that would make an elf proud. Her courage encouraged the Nazgul she rode with, and he knew that she would survive this day. Truly, she was a daughter of the mighty Gurath V.
The youngest son, Alexander, had the most difficulty dealing with the situation. He had come into such a peaceful world, death was foreign to him. By the time he was born, his father and mother had created a land that did not know danger or injustice, a kingdom virtually without fear. He knew his father still fought, but it seemed to be so distant when he was around that he did not notice it. Alexander spent much of his time among the people of the kingdom, working on charities or helping the voice of the people to be heard. There were still many injured in this time of peace, so Alexander decided to take up the medical arts. He learned from the humans in the kingdom all sorts of cures and remedies for various ailments. Then, taking what he had learned and showing it to his mother, Rhianna brought him to the elven healers who taught him the ways of restoration and protection.
Alexander, though quite shaken and frightened by the horrors that appeared before them, knew that his abilities were needed. He began to cast minor spells of healing on those who had been hit, and erected auras of protection around himself and his siblings. They would not stop a blade, but might be enough to block a stray projectile.
The fighting grew fierce as the Nazgul engaged their numerous enemy. Gurath VI was launching spells as fast as he could focus on the threats, though it was visibly exhausting him. He was breathing heavy, slumping over as weakness was overcoming his body. Each spell struck with less force than the last, and his arms were beginning to scorch with the scarcely controlled fire.
Rhiannia continued to nock arrows and release them into the enemy, but even her enhanced reflexes could not handle so much action at once. Her eyes began to blur from the intense focus required for her shots, and her peripheral senses began to dim. Several times an enemy got close enough that she was unable to turn in time, and was saved by another in the company. Her body was best of the three able to handle the intense effort, but she had never faced a fight this overwhelming before, and definitely had never come this close to death.
Alexander attempted to soften blows with his shielding, and was several times able to deflect a stray arrow from the horde below before it could strike an ally. However, his magic required great focus and precision, and any time an enemy would get close and let out one of their gutteral roars before an ally could strike it down, he found himself shaking, dropped to his knees from the fright. Used to a calm silent environment for treatment, the battlefield left him scarcely able to act. His brother and sister tried to protect him as much as possible, but they had enemies of their own to worry about. Though it appeared the Nazgul would have been able to take this force by themselves, having to watch and protect the children meant they could not fight at full strength. As he was distracted by this thought, one of the Nazgul let out a cry as he was pierced in the thigh by an arrow. They had been getting lower and closer to the forest to escape, but this meant the danger from below only grew greater. As he focused on the words of healing and prepared his spell to direct at his wounded ally, another arrow shot up and pierced him in the shoulder. As he screamed out and began to fall, his siblings immediately turned to him, shouting, "Alexander!"
Half the company turned and saw Alexander with the arrow through him. As the rider who had been ferrying Alexander spun about and caught him, curses flew through the air. These were not ordinary curses, but ancient words that had been born before the orcs tread the earth. The Nazgul who had been fighting suddenly sprouted a pair of wings and began to burn with a dark fire. These newborne warriors were far faster and stronger than the company they had been fighting with. Those who had been carrying the children flew down with a terrible speed, knowing that unless they acted fast the child would die.
Great explosions began to occur as the enchanted Nazgul flew into their foes, destroying them with mighty blows and black balls of fire. When all of the corrupted beasts had been destroyed, the remaining Nazgul flew down to meet the ones with the children who were just landing. A few, those who had transformed, blasted off towards the humans who threatened the children. They did not stand a chance against the fury of these ancient beings.
As the Nazgul carrying the children landed, they found an army of halflings guarding the forest, preventing them from entering. They quickly tried to explain their plight, seeing that the Halflings had not attacked them on sight, and asked them to help the boy who was wounded.
The leader of the army, an adventurer by the name of Alderan, could see that these powerful warriors were not evil, and that the innocent faces of the children showed that they were frightened and did really need help. When he saw Alexander passed out with tears still on his face, he knew what he had to do. He immediately orders his men to stand guard and not let any but these Nazgul through. He then lead them to their healers, where they began trying to heal the boy. He then told them to come see the elders and tell them of their plight. They knew they should, but could not leave the boy. Seeing their concerned faces and the children standing by their brother, crying, he knew it would be best to wait. He ordered a messenger to tell the elders that they had company, then waited with the Nazgul to watch over the boy. Alexander had not awoken since being struck with the arrow, and remained unconscious now. The halflings were able to remove the arrow and stabilize the wound. Though the boy was no longer bleeding, he remained white, scarcely breathing, and breaking out in a cold sweat. Though still alive, he appeared to be just barely so. When the children were sufficiently assured that their brother was alright, Alderan lead the Nazgul and the children to the hall of elders.
Before them sat 6 wizened old men at various heights. They asked for the story of the party, and what they were doing intruding upon the land of the Halflings. Upon hearing their story of another world, and the land of peace they had lived in, the halfling elders decided that these were definitely not spies and not men of the world they now saw around them. They told the company, "It is a pity you have stumbled upon this poor land at the time you did. Long ago, this land was new and good. Greedy and corrupt lords came and enslaved the people of the land, threatening them with army and force. For many years now, we have suffered at the whims of these rulers, who do battle at their fancy with the innocent people of the land. We are but a game for them. You saw on your entry to this land but a fraction of the horrible twisted forces at work in this world. It is only through our strength that we were able to hold on to this patch of land, guarded by the lives of our men and the enchantments that hide it from the outside. A few sneak in by desperation, and some are able to break through by force, but we have been able to survive by distancing ourselves from the wartorn world. As you appear to mean us all no harm, I would welcome you to stay with us as long as you wish, as long as you swear not to tell the others of this world about us."
Seeing that these halflings had managed to preserve a corner of piece in this wartorn world, the Nazgul decided that this would be a reasonable place to rest until they could continue their journey to safe lands. Gurath VI said, with tears in his eyes, "We'll stay here... at least until... Alexander is better."
Days turned into weeks, yet still Alexander did not recover. Alexander had always been resistant to magic, thanks to his own affinity for casting it. Even the foreign magic and healing of the halflings was ineffective. As he declined, Rhiannia and Gurath sat beside him, praying that he would be restored, to come back and be with them, surviving this horrible ordeal. The council gladly accepted these strangers as good allies in a time of need, and their speed and strength was a great assistance as they could do things the halflings could not. Gurath conversed with the healers and mages of the commune, comparing styles of casting and understandings of the workings of the world. He was fascinated with the way their magics work, but ended up disappointed that it was insufficient to heal his brother. Rhiannia listened to the words of the halflings, but was too distraught about her brother to act or engage in any sort of cooperation. She sat and watched her brother for a month, praying each day that he would get better.
On the 37th day, horns blared through the caverns of the halflings. The Nazgul rushed into the hospital room where the siblings lay, as soldiers filed past in the hall behind them. "Stand and fight!" they cried. "The foe is upon us, and these halflings will not be able to stand before them. Stand now, lest we risk further destruction of this peaceful haven."
Gurath and Rhiannia, taking one last glance at their wounded brother, prepared themselves to fight for his sake. They took one stop by the council’s chambers to receive instructions for the coming battle. The council thanked them for assisting in the defence, and then gave the warriors their blessing for the coming battle. The generals set up the plan for the coming battle. It would be a two front battle, the main battle would take place above ground, at the main gates, and the secondary guard would take the underground passage that was normally used as a trade route. The scouts reported that the entrance several miles from the city had been infiltrated, which meant that the underground passage would likely become a point of entry for the attackers. Therefore, the archers, mages, cavalry, and main battalion was sent to the front gate, and the elite squadron of infantry and specialists would be the underground stopping force. Because strength was so necessary in the underground battalion, Rhiannia decided that she would go with a small battalion of Nazgul to hold off the enemies in the underground tunnel. The generals said that the outsiders were free to do as they wished, and that their help would be appreciated regardless of their decision. After the various groupings of soldiers were spilt up and ready to march off to battle, the nazgul began taking about which path they should take. Gurath desired that they should stick together and protect each other, and the nazgul respected his wishes, but they also advised that the Halflings would not be able to hold both fronts on their own. Rhiannia told Gurath to stand up and be strong, they needed to protect this place for their brother. After promising him that she would be alright, Gurath agreed to having them split up. Of the 30 Nazgul that remained, 10 would stand by Rhiannia in the tunnels, halting the enemy there. 10 would stand guarding Gurath and the other mages and archers, acting as the last line of defense for the troops above ground, and the remaining 10 would guide and direct the battle, acting similar to generals and messengers, being the only ones capable of flying and having more military experience than any others among their allies. With this decided, the mages and healers had one last gift before the battle. Besides the general array of protective spells and enchantments, each of the outsiders was given a protective amulet, and a healing kit, containing general potions to cure minor wounds. Besides that, the warriors heading underground received spells of darkvision that would make them better able to act while fighting underground. They marched out of the hall in order, the leaders quickly familiarizing themselves with the squadrons they had found themselves in charge of. Gurath was a little frightened by the coming danger, and the possibility of losing more than he already had. As he marched towards the battle, he gazed at the Halflings around him, and realized that they were even more frightened than he was. They had not lost their home yet, and although they lived in a war-torn world, many of them appeared to be entirely unused to the idea of fighting. It seemed like they had not undergone any serious training at all. The archers had been little more than hunters beforehand, and the mages had been primarily healers. Less than half of them could conjure a proper fireball, let alone cast during battle. Their fear was tangible, just beneath their desire to conquer this foe and protect their homeland. Their courage was barely greater than their fear, but as long as they could maintain that courage, the battle would likely not be overwhelming. That was the way Gurath felt, but the nazgul were not that confident. All they saw were inexperienced peasants, civilians that should be herded away from battle, not pushed into it. Still, the commanders gave them hope. There were a few strong warriors among the Halflings, and their strength and confidence was sufficient proof that they might be able to stand on their own.
Rhiannia had a different mindset stepping into battle. She was a little worried about Alexander, but that worry quickly left her mind as she prepared her mind for battle. She was quite excited for this chance to fight again so soon, a break from the worried silence of sitting, tormented, at the bed of her injured brother. She couldn’t bear to watch him deteriorate any longer. She never had any patience for sitting around and maintaining the status quo. She always wanted to move forward, to progress and improve the situation. Therefore, to move forward she shut the thoughts of her injured brother and the battle above out of her mind and focused in on the moment. Building her strength, she found herself drawn to the nazgul of the group, seeing how they composed themselves and acting likewise. It was them that she would rely on to get through this fight, the elite of her homeland that she had always looked up to.
As the halls emptied, and the troops lined up for battle, the council remained, preparing their last efforts and the enchantments that would strengthen their home against the coming invaders. Few healers remained, only those that lacked real magical power and were little more than aides to the real healers. These trainees would likely never become full mages, but this was their place in society. Their duty is to assist the wounded in their healing, even if they can’t do so themselves. Alexander’s body was motionless, and there was hardly a breath coming from him. He had grown progressively weaker, and the mages agreed that he wouldn’t survive for much longer. He showed no signs of recovery though no source of ailment could be determined.
Ai, but life is so short, and our time here is already spent. I will finish these chronicles at a later point, though I have not the strength nor time to finish now. The story will be finished next era, when this world is reformed and I have a place to finish my writing.
This is where the scroll of the Era of Dark Orion ended. The further recordings of Gurath are held in another text, which will finish the story told here.

There were rumors that a man was spotted among a swirling cloud of darkness, and those places it landed were consumed by death and blood, but such stories should not be taken as any more than rumor. They are often unfounded and entirely the work of drunkards.
