My cat has been bitten
03:27:53 Oct 26th 09 - Mr. Crashandburn:

My cat has been bitten by a snake or possibly a spider on the neck. She seems half paralized and keeps falling over and stumbling whenever she tries to walk. We found her like this about 4 hours ago and nothing has changed. I called the vet but they just said to bring her in and never gave any helpful advise. I can't afford $1000 or more in vet fees and want to know if there is anything i can get from a chemist or something that can help.

Btw, i've shaved off all the fur around the bite and there's just a red dot and no swelling whatsoever.

03:40:25 Oct 26th 09 - Sir Thor:

Just one red dot would be a spider bite... Possibly some other insect such as a centipede, but a spider is the most likely due to the location of the bite. Other than anti-poisons that you can only get from a vet, there's not much else you can do. I'm sorry your cat was unfortunate enough to get a bite. Best of luck to you in finding something to help.

Try searching the internet. There may be some helpful information out there.

03:58:09 Oct 26th 09 - Mr. Crashandburn:

Forgot to mention that the reason I think it could be a snake is because where she was bitten was all wet like as if the snake only just got her and most of the venom was sprayed onto the fur

And I can't find anything useful on the internet either

04:06:14 Oct 26th 09 - Mr. Midban The Wise:

Spider bite'll usually go black around the area. Snakes use nerve poison. Would cause those kinds of symptoms. I don't know anything that you can do. Knowing the kind of snake might help, though. I would try searching for kinds of poisonous snakes in your area. You might be able to figure out an antivenom if you know that. Good luck.

04:17:07 Oct 26th 09 - Duke Kevdwayne:

My vet has told me to give my dog children's Benadryl for allergic reactions (he is highly allergic to insect bites).... not sure if it is OK for felines but worth looking into..... I did, google benadryl for cats   500K hits and here is one (you just have to give them your e-mail to read the article but it covers dosage)

http://www.petplace.com/drug-library/diphenhydramine-benadryl/page1.aspx

04:29:16 Oct 26th 09 - Mr. Doomhammer:

The Black widow spider does attack the nervous system.... but yeah, most poisons will kill something within a couple hours, if not a lot sooner... if its not dead already, you're probably okay...

04:33:37 Oct 26th 09 - Mr. Midban The Wise:

Did some more research. Snake bite will usually have severe swelling. I don't know what it is. Spider doesn't explain the wetness.

05:25:13 Oct 26th 09 - Mr. Hkxxxooo:

You didn't say where you are.  In the South USA when cats/dogs eat a lizard they experience those symptons.  Fortunately they are temporary and the animals recover.

07:52:17 Oct 26th 09 - Mr. Crashandburn:

Thanks for all the responces guys. And after all these hours she's still alive and there seems to be a slight improvement (she even managed to jump up onto a cubourd which would not have been possible at first) but is still very weak. And well, i'm not american, I live in Queensland, Australia.

07:57:04 Oct 26th 09 - Prince Charley The Kitten:

Oh...Slade probably bit the cat....

07:57:57 Oct 26th 09 - Dr. Raving Lunatic:

I was afraid that would be your answer. There are a number of poisonous things that could have bitten her. But her still being alive and getting a bit better is good news. She may have some permanent nerve damage though.

11:17:45 Oct 26th 09 - Mr. Dead Oralive:

Better then being dead though.

12:45:52 Oct 26th 09 - Mr. Frodo Lost His Ring:

being from queensland, australia myself (though living in russia now) and an ex paramedic...it is quite possible it is a paralytic tick, particularly in northern queensland.

never EVER go searching for the snake, it is a major risk factor for yourself and extremely bad advice. snake antivenoms work on almost every snake type.

the wetness could be related or it could not, my first recommendation is a vet(despite the cost) and not to look for internet advice and theories.

most of these poisons are slow acting and even with survival can have lasting health effects if not treated but my guess is a tick bite, not spider and not snake.

12:52:15 Oct 26th 09 - Mr. Betty Boop The Thundercat Hoe:

13:43:57 Oct 26th 09 - Mr. The Bear Jew:

14:39:13 Oct 26th 09 - Mr. Royal Flush:

Your cat is proberly going to die if you live in Australia.

Sorry to hear that.
I hope it doesn't though, all the best.

14:43:54 Oct 26th 09 - Sir Thor:

Way to keep the guys hopes up, Royal Flush. <_<

14:48:40 Oct 26th 09 - Mr. Crashandburn:

Lol, you people think of me so bad ;/
Also, animals will try and stand / walk even if they have broke legs

Its a natural instinct incase any predators are around, so they think their prey is fine and not injured
Sorry to put you down again

But indeed, I hope it gets better.

14:52:07 Oct 26th 09 - WolfLord Durza Floyd Pepper IV:

Random shut up. Give the cat a break, it'll get better i'm sure.

17:33:11 Oct 26th 09 - Prince Charley The Kitten:

19:31:36 Oct 26th 09 - WolfLord Durza Floyd Pepper IV:

Nah, cause cats are better.

19:35:40 Oct 26th 09 - Mr. Ruxbury:

I thought u lived with wolves, not with lions :o)

03:32:45 Oct 27th 09 - Mr. Platnium:

sry to hear that man, i live in america and our cat was bitten by something and well he didnt turn out so bad. of course we did take him to the vet. in the end he had a lil limp because like someone said, it was nerve damage. however the bite was small and red like someone poked them with a large needle. i recomend the vet if you really are desperate otherwise pray. the fact that she still stands shows willpower, and their aint no medicine more powerful than the mind.

01:47:48 Oct 28th 09 - Sir Thor:

Royal Flush is simply mellow-dramatic and think he sounds smart by preaching about 'natural instincts'.

02:18:35 Oct 28th 09 - Duke Random:

why is everyone hacking me :(

I only just read this thread :S

04:58:50 Oct 28th 09 - Mr. Crashandburn:

well after 3 days my cats in perfect health like as if nothing ever happened so yeah in your face flush ;p

08:55:30 Oct 28th 09 - Mr. Lover:

Your cats in purrrrfect health you say?

09:15:16 Oct 28th 09 - Mr. Royal Flush:

Not really 'In my face'

Im glad your cat is fine, if you read my first post.
I say that.

06:34:38 Oct 29th 09 - Mr. Desol:

Fortunately for you, cats aren't to expensive to replace.

17:27:00 Oct 29th 09 - WolfLord Durza Floyd Pepper IV:

Even more fortunate, he didn't have to replace his cat.

18:01:10 Oct 29th 09 - Mr. Crashandburn:

Desol that's kind of heartless you know. That's almost like saying to someone who's kid is about to die "Fortunately for you, kids aren't expensive to replace when you hit the sack and make more babies" lol

19:15:39 Oct 29th 09 - Mr. Midban The Wise:

That's awesome, crashandburn. Good to hear it.

19:17:11 Oct 29th 09 - Mr. Desol:

You kidding, kids are very expensive!
Yes, that was very heartless of me, that was my intention and my goal, to be as mean as I could.

00:35:41 Oct 30th 09 - Mr. Platnium:

Congrats on the improved health of your furry feline friend.
