The elves of the city are simply the poorer people in the cities , this is because dragon age origins is set up in the HUMAN cities , it also states clearly that their are elves who are not poor in the cities and do not live in the alienages(slums) , on top of this the majority of elves are the Dalish elves , these are elves who live in the forest and frequently attack and kill any humans who enter the forest , and have a Stronger army then the humans. Not really what id call slaves ehh?

The Dalish are not very numerous in fact and live like nomads since they can not afford to stay in one place for to long for fear of some local lord taking to arms to get rid of them.

Then again, the Magic in Dragon Age is far stronger. Elves Are Magic driven, not brutes who kill people wandering through the woods. | ||||

And yes they ARE hostile and aggressive towards "shemlens" who get to close to their camps uninvited. | ||||
