Black Death

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Illustration of the Black Death from the Toggenburg Bible (1411).
The Black Death, also known as the Black Plague, was a devastating pandemic that first struck Europe in the mid-late-14th century (134751),"

Just noticed a classical thing about never to trust in Wikipedia.

In Thucydides works about the Athen-Spartan war 431-404 BC it is clearly recorded that during the first 4 years of the war Plague struck Athens.(Thucydides was a Athenian general during the named war and made what is probably the first real historical chronicle.)

Ops sorry zeta I just read up on the forum rules I had not read them for some years. and I think it will look like I avoided the word filter.
Though that was not the plan the use of Fracking is something I got from watching Battlestar Galactica to much.

Wikipedia can be edited by any anonymous person so some people may like to pretwnd that they know what they're saying and they may write a load of Bull.

When using Wiki, its best to cross-reference the info. ;)

23:36:22 Jun 9th 08 - Lord Erunion Telcontar:

Errr...

Wikipedia is correct in this. In the ancient times, any pandemic of any sort that caused death was called a 'plague.' The Black Plague is what first struck Europe in the 14th century...
Therefore, they are correct in stating this.

00:00:29 Jun 10th 08 - Swedish Chef Brashen:

Well your right and your wrong.
Since this millennium the black plague have been proven to be several different diseases as well.
The copied section from wikipedia is explanation on what the plague are.

And the many outbreaks that been said to be the black plague have lately been proven to be different type of plague by examination of skeletons in graves and by examinations of the area and climate at the time of the outbreak.
So whats used to be called black death is in fact also several different diseases collected under one name just as plague.

"The Plague of Athens was a devastating epidemic which hit the city-state of Athens in ancient Greece during the second year of the Peloponnesian War (430 BC), when an Athenian victory still seemed within reach. It is believed to have entered Athens through Piraeus, the city's port and sole source of food and supplies. The city-state of Sparta, and much of the eastern Mediterranean, was also struck by the disease. The plague returned twice more, in 429 BC and in the winter of 427/6 BC."

"in human history, the term plague refers to an epidemic disease causing a high rate of mortality, i.e. a pestilence. An epidemic—disease outbreaks that strike a large number of people in an area at the same time—may also become a pandemic when it spreads over a wide geographical area or throughout many countries."

Thanks for supplying references.

03:06:52 Jun 10th 08 - Mr. Killstone:

But Brash, the Black Plague is talking about the time period in which those many different illnesses (which you have just informaned me about) happened. It is not refering to a specific illness. It's kind of like the difference between World War I and World War II. They were both all across the world but they are different wars. Or like two different hurricanes (atleast i nthe US idk if they name them elsewhere) they are both catagorized as a hurricane but are two different ones. There was the Plague of Athens and the Black Plague, they are both plagues but they were at two different times and therefore have two different names.

And jsut a thing you might argue back with. You could say they were the same plague and to that i would say that the black plague was several different illnesses, and in your definition of plague it is jsut an epidemic not a specific epidemic

15:28:28 Jun 12th 08 - Mr. Pathson:

lol.  I find it humorous how the original poster talks about americans being stupid and then cant even figure out that the Black Death/Black Plague was just one pandemic episode of many.

I mean, to find an equivalent of what you are saying lets look at it this way.  Someone says the digital revolution was at the end of the 20th century.  Then, you reply "oh no its not, the industrial revolution was much earlier!".  I mean, yes...both words have DO "revolution" in them, but they arent the same.  The Black Death/Black Plague is the name of a pandemic that heavily depopulated Europe in the 14th Century.  Its not the name of the pandemic causing agent.  If you had bubonic plague and a doctor diagnosed it he would not say "You have black death!".  He would say you have plague.  Why?  Because the Black Death/Black Plague is the name of a historical event.  I honestly don't see where your confusion could be stemming from.

So...wikipedia was spot on.
