16:22:21 Mar 1st 10 - Emperor Gaius Septimus Cidellus:

[[OOC: Gaius guesses it to be around two hundred. It is not an accurate figure, and he thinks he's killed far more than he's killed. I'm not stupid, though Deallus would say otherwise. XD]]

"How long have we been fighting?" Jarnas mused. He was talking with his friends, those few who were still standing. It seemed that nearly his entire century had been killed, wounded and replaced.

"Too long. Two years? I think so. War will make corpses of us all."

"We're losing, aren't we? We're using the same tactics, the same equipment, the same everything that they are, only they've got more men. Two Duchy's have folded. Which one is next?"

"Not ours Jarnas. Not ours. If we go, we'll take their filthy Imperial hides with us. The VII will never fall! We've yet to lose a battle!"

"What about Tarkal Woods, we lost that one didn't we."

"'Course not. That was a tactical withdrawal. It just looked like we lost the battle."

Chuckling, Jarnas walked off. At least he had a good Legate in charge, and that made him much, much more comfortable in his position as Decum.

16:39:26 Mar 2nd 10 - Emperor Gaius Septimus Cidellus:

[[OOC: Going to make a pay-chart. By "a day" I obviously mean every turn. =P

Wartime - 150 gold a day

Wartime - 1250 gold a day

General (Only open to nobles, requires mastery of tactics)
Peacetime - 2000 gold a day
Wartime - 2500 gold a day]]

Gaius's improvement in tactics was quickly recognized by his Legate, who promoted him to the position of Centurion. Gaius was well suited to the task, and his soldiers respected him just as they respected every other Centurion. Gaius enjoyed commanding others, but he hated losing men. It was part of the job, but he still hated it. The pay increase didn't really make up for the terrible dreams every night, but the fact that he was serving his Empire better than before did make up for it. He was proud to be a soldier of the Serillian Empire.

The Centurion was dead. Like so many others, he had been slain on the field of combat.
This left Jarnas in an interesting position. Young as he was, the brutal war had left him as the senior Decum. Now he was Centurion of a battalion composed of eager, scared recruits. Most of the veterans were dead and replaced.

Jarnas quickly took up the slack, drilling and drilling his men. He wanted these boys to survive their next engagement, to that end he sent two requests to the Legions Quartermaster and to the Legate;

First he requested the freedom to drill his men outside of the box, using a different set of tactics and ideas.
Second he requested a shipment of spears and javelins to his legion, as well as a request to have the legions armourer change their shields slightly.

Excited but worried, Jarnas awaited the answer.

{Septim, whether this goes through or not is up to you.}

Jonny had been fighting for a long time now. It felt like forever. this war was going to be the death of him, like it had been for so many others. He had seen more then 3/4 of his original Century, including his Centurion now, die in action. Most of the other Centuries had lost many more then that, and so he was blessed when they put him in charge of his original group. Apparently his Centurion had requested he become the leader personnally. Being the leader was hard. Jonny drilled his men, and when they fought, they fought hard. As his Decom had been, now his Legion was. They were the first in, and the last out. When men signed up for his Century, they knew what they had in store. Knew that the odds of them surviving to the next battle were. And yet many tried. Jonny only took the best. And the best they would become...

22:47:41 Mar 2nd 10 - Emperor Gaius Septimus Cidellus:

[[OOC: Jonny, you'll take whoever is given to you. A lot of men are dying in the war, and the "best" are becoming the next Centurions. Trained legionnaires are becoming sparse, and are being replaced by Auxiliaries. Your century is now mainly auxiliaries, as is mine, and everybody else's. XD

As for your requests, the shields have to remain the same. It's a standard, and they can't afford to screw up mass production to fit the needs of one century. Drilling them differently is not an option, as they need to have the same training as everybody else. However, drilling them EXTRA in your spare time is fine, but will lower morale due to the loss of their spare time.]]

Lanoc found his shack in ruins. He couldn't have really cared less about the broken shelf or the clothes strewn about the place, but he noticed that "Reading for Journeymen" was missing instantly. Lanoc rushed into the street, but of course the culprit was nowhere near.
He looked cautiously at the huge man in front of him. Lanoc recalled an earlier conversation with him, he was an assassin. Lanoc took out two hundred and ninety five gold coins, and passed them to the man, explaining that he wanted the book returned, and the thief dead, unable to give any more information. Lanoc then returned to his shack, as the man vanished into the corners of the night. He tidied up the mess in his shack, and took out "Reading for Veterans", which he had luckily kept with him.

Just when he thought that he knew all about wars and how they were waged and begun to grew tired if it he was sent for a brief course in tactics nearby which had been a complete eye opener. Never before had he realized that there was so much which went to battle. He looked almost desiringly at books filled with campaigns of great leaders of men at war and decided that once the war was over he'd take leave and learn how to read first thing.

[[OOC: Three mistakes in Himanil's post.

First: Himanil needs to change it from 150 gold a day to 450 gold a day.

Second: He needs to change what level of tactics he is studying from veteran to expert.

Third: You don't take a course to get Veteran from experience. You get it from pure experience. Trial and error. No big deal, your post worked the same, just wanted to clear it up though. =P

That is all there, if Jonny is four turns behind us, let me check what I was four turns back. It won't be the EXACT amount of money he had, because I had four turns of peacetime that he didn't. So, lets just subtract four hundred gold from his current amount. Same with Erunion if he joined four days after. Let me check...that wouldn't work. >>

The RP started February 17th, Erunion joined in February 22nd. He's five turns behind us. The RP has been active for...thirteen days I think. The war officially started on February 25th, so it's been going for...five days.

So, Erunion had three days of peacetime. That means NO pay during peace, because he graduated from the legionnaire training the day the war started.

So, he's been in war for five days, four of those days he got 150 gold a day, one day he got 450 gold a day.

So...150x4=600+450=1050.

Erunion should have 1050 gold, but he's in the same skill levels as us. Age is up to him. Jonny joined on the 22nd as well, so he's the same as Erunion.

Let me know if you find any mistakes in my audit. I'm pretty tired at the moment. >>

Sorry for the inquisition, guys. I hope you understand, just trying to make it fair to those who started earlier.  :( ]]

Jonny had been a Centurion for six months. Basically all of the expirienced troops were gone, and he was using Auxillary forces [HAPPY NOW!!.... :( ] just like everyone else. However, his always seemed more eager to fight then all the rest. Youngsters swarmed to his standard, and his Century was always filled to capacity, as it seemed like there was almost a waiting list to join up. Jonny kept an easy command, drilling regularly, and going over tactics A LOT. His men actually learned something, and those who had survived more then a few battles were considered to be very knowledable indeed. Those who had seen him fight, knew why he was their Centurion. Never leaving a man behind, he covered anyone, and would fight ten men at once if it meant one of his guys could make it out alive. He was ferocious, and everyone knew it. A many feared it...

16:30:34 Mar 3rd 10 - Emperor Gaius Septimus Cidellus:

[[OOC: Alright, making an offer. Emperor Aulus III has decreed that ANY soldiers of the rebel armies may desert their legion and surrender. If they surrender without fighting, they will be held for six months in an Imperial Prison. After those six months, if they are deemed loyal to the Empire, they will be set free.

If the prisoners choose, they could also be given a position in the Imperial Army. Your position, just as it always does, depends on your skills. You will also be able to keep your gold and property.

This is a one-time offer, after that there will be almost no chance of gaining nobility. Will you value your honor, or your career? =P]]

Gaius's century was not the best in the legions, for he could not keep auxiliaries alive long enough to make them decent soldiers. During several engagements, he had been heavily scarred, stabbed several times, and had lost part of his right ear. Gaius decided to grow a short beard to help cover the scars.

There was, however, good news to be had. Tibenos and Somermon had fallen to the Imperial Armies. The rebels were fighting hard, but the fact that they had more men really helped. Gaius knew that this war would be hard, but they were getting close to Wednor.

He soon heard that the seventy-four year old Arlen Wednor, leader of the revolt, had died from pneumonia. His oldest son, the fifty-two year old Varen Wednor, was now the Duke of Wednor. He was not a great commander like his father (who had been a trusted General of Emperor Marcus), but he was able to hold the rebellion together. Gaius couldn't wait to see that son of a bitch crucified.

Tiberius's body moved with the sword. 'As one,' was how the trainers at recruit camp had called it. He pulled out his sword as rapidly as it had gone into the tied up naked deserter. Desertions were rare in the legion, almost unheard of but so were high intensity fights of this level for such prolonged periods of time. He could see pain in the face of the Cohort commander as he gave the order. That auxilliary had been a very promising soldier but the Generals unaware of conditions on the ground and paucity of soldiers had made a point to ensure that deserters suffered the most gruelling possible punishment. Let's hope they don't start decimation to maintain discipline now, though Tiberius. They'd leave paper armies to fight the enemy then. With that thought he retired to his tent to get some sleep.

The war had been long and bloody, but the rebels were losing. You could feel it throughout the camp. These were victorious warriors who won battle after battle. But they were losing the war.

The Legate had called his centurions into the command tent. He looked saddened, and worried.
"Our Leader is dead. Arlen Wednor has died, and his son is now in command. Our rebellion was strong in ideals and plans, but ultimately we have failed. Centurions. I propose that we surrender to the Imperial forces. This choice is yours, and every man under you can choose for themselves. Stay with me and surrender to the Empire, or leave, join another legion and continue the fight. You have until tomorrow to decide. Tell your men, as they are to decide for themselves."

Shocked, even crushed, the Centurions filed out of the tent. Some were angry, they would likely be leaving. Others saw the sense of their Legate. Jarnas stayed behind.

"Sir, My oaths and my loyalty were to the now dead Duke, not his son. You have led me and my men to victory time and again. I will come with you, and I believe that my Century will come with me. I will give them the sad news."

----------------------------------

The next morning, a full three quarters of the legion marched behind their Legate, under the laurel of peace and the white flag of truce.

Talks were quick and decisive. The Legion would leave for the Duchy of Berder, where they would be separated into centuries, to prevent a double-cross. They would be treated civilly by the Imperial forces, and held only for a six-month period, after which they would be allowed to leave the army or join with the Imperial forces.

{Darn it Septim! I was hoping that the rebellion would be at least partially successful, but it looks like it's collapsed. I have surrendered, and will probably join the Imperial army once my six-month probation is up.}

Lanoc gazed at the tattered rag held in front of him. The assassin guffawed. "I got him, I did. Spilled his brains over the pavement." A pair of guards rushed at the assassin from behind, bringing the man to his feet. "Do you have any business with this man?" said one gruffly. Lanoc knew he wasn't likely to get his gold or his book back. "No, I don't. Why?" he asked, as innocently as possible. "The brute is a thief. Stole this book and other things," he said, holding up a copy of "Reading for Journeyman". Lanoc decided it would be best to keep his mouth shut. He nodded, and cursed the thief under his breath as he was laid away to be imprisoned.

06:22:59 Mar 4th 10 - Emperor Gaius Septimus Cidellus:

[[OOC: They might've pulled a conditional surrender if Wednor hadn't died. *shrugs*

And yes, Lanoc, your pay will be 1,600 gold a day. You're becoming a very wealthy scholar. Will have to list housing soon. =D

The war is drawing to a close. Each player will soon receive a certain number of PP based on what side they were on. Imperials will receive the most, surrendered rebels will receive the second highest amount, and rebels will receive negative PP, which means they will be fugitives and forced on the run.

Sorry to anybody on the rebel side. The Imperials had more men, that was the only reason they won. Look at the bright side, seasoned veterans will be rare in the Empire. You'll also have plenty of money, a free journeyman class in any skill (as was part of the military officer career, if you look at the intro), medals, and plenty of leave.

The war ends tomorrow (Thursday, March 4th). Good luck in post-war Serillia, everybody!]]

15:35:27 Mar 4th 10 - Emperor Gaius Septimus Cidellus:

[[OOC: The war is over everybody, however, there is a significant event at the final siege of Burkal, seat of the Wednor family and capital of the Duchy of Wednor.

During the battle, a fair amount of soldiers (even Centurions) will abandon their posts in order to get the best loot before the others can begin looting. This is only applicable for soldiers of Serillia, obviously. However, both Erunion and Jonny can rejoin at the beginning of this turn, so they can still take part in either option if they rejoin. =P

Also, for fighting in the war you receive 3 PP anyway. Remember to change your pay back to peace-pay, as we are no longer at war.

You have a choice:

A) Loot - You receive 15,000 gold from robbing the Wednoric treasury (along with several others), but you become a deserter of the legions. The dishonor of being a deserter will work as a large roadblock in the path to nobility, obviously. You will also be a fugitive. You can always find a place to hide, though. =P

B) Hold your position - You receive 1,000 gold, 3 Prominence points, and an automatic upgrade in tactics.]]

The Siege of Wednor was a horrible memory for Gaius. He had thought his men had honor. This was proven incorrect when they ran from the field of battle in order to loot like greedy little bastards. Gaius could never do that, he would never abandon his own men for wealth. The battle was hard, but by the end of the day, the city was Serillia's. The treasury had been robbed by the looters, and there was little left for Gaius to loot. He managed to find a sword in the palace that had probably belonged to Wednor himself. It had jewels in the pommel and crossguard, and the hilt looked to be made of gold. Gaius sold it for around a thousand gold.

The experience of holding the line against the last wave of rebels left Gaius with a better understanding of tactics, and his superiors recognized his loyalty by promoting him to the rank of legate.

Gaius was dumbstruck. He had only been in the legion a total of seven and a half years, and he was already a legate! And on top of it all, the Emperor had heard of him! There was talk of Gaius being knighted for his services in the war. Gaius could barely hold in his excitement.

Having served his time, Jarnas took his Century and rejoined the Imperial army, only to be brought to the siege of Wednor.

It was quick, and bloody. Jarnas thanked the almighty that his men weren't called upon to assault the city, but were left in reserve. Once the battle was over, however, vast numbers of men began deserting their posts and rushing to sack the city. The legate who was in charge of the reserves was livid, riding about screaming for the men to return to their posts. As he rode between Jarnas' century and another one, some opportunistic sackers from the other century jumped him.

"Century! Stop those men!"

Jarnas' forces rushed over, killed the deserters and secured the legate.

"Sir, are you alright?"

"Yes I'm fine! But those, those spurcamen are raping this city! You were one of the rebels, weren't you?" The old Legate was livid.

"Yes Sir. I was." Jarnas' reply was dignified and reserved.

"Then do this final service for your old masters, take your century, they seem the best behaved, and do what you can to stop this!"

"Yes Sir."

The legate was screaming now, his face purple; "Go. NOW! Else I'll have you killed for desertion, rebel filth."

The legate remounted his horse, muttering under his breath, his once brilliant armour had been dirtied and his white hair was splotched with blood and dirt. Jarnas was offended by the man, but obeyed orders. His men who had fought under him during the rebellion were still with him, and the lot of them were appalled by the devastation of this city they had once fought to protect. They reformed, and double-timed it into the city, where they started killing any deserters they found, a duty they went to with a will. It wasn't particularly hard. These men were drunk, disorganized and loaded down with plunder.

--------------------------

The war was now over, and to his shock Jarnas had been promoted to Legate. It seemed that the Emperor's amnesty proclamation had been sweeping. As Jarnas had left the rebellion, he was officially treated as any other Soldier would be and duly rewarded for his military experience and skill in combat. Naturally, there was much prejudice against him, and for now he had not been given a legion. He was a legate with only a century to his name. He was not allowed any of the veterans, save only those who had served under him, and was told to build his own army. Further, while Jarnas was known to be worthy of knighthood, finding a Lord or Duke who would take him would be difficult at best.

Jonny watched the sacking of the city with unease. His men had been fighting for years, and he had seen many of his friends die horrible deaths. He watched his men go, sack the city, and did almost nothing to stop them. His calm spread through out his men though, and only a few of the newest men deserted and ran away. Most of his men stayed at his side, and when it was finally their turn to parade through the city, they did so with pride.

A few of the Legates had deserted, and although he was young, Jonny was once again promoted. Many had heard of his deeds in battle. They would not regret this decision. It was a good time for Jonny. He enjoyed the new feeling of responsibility. And he enjoyed the feeling he got for having served a goal much greater then just himself.

16:05:19 Mar 5th 10 - Lord Himanil X:

Tiberius stood dumbfounded as he looked at the second in command of the legion, a former centurion of his kneeling before him offering him the position of Legate as he had been instructed to do. Kicking him in his butt Tiberius gave a wide grin, "Up and about soldier! About time for some retribution, eh?" he barked jovially. His former centurion gave him a stern stare that almost made his salute him again before he burst out laughing. "Oh well all's well," he said. "I was far too old to be made now, due for retirement in a few years."

As Tiberius surveyed his legion he felt pride swell in him. His father had been able to achieve the rank of second in command legate after after 30 years of service in the legion and he'd surpassed that in just 6 and a half years. Who said war wasn't rewarding. For the victorious perhaps said a voice in his head and his eyes wandered off to some Rebel legionairres still imprisoned.

Gaius, son of Tiberius, was a Legate. One of the highest ranks in the Serillian Army. And soon, he would be a knight. He was being knighted by the Emperor himself! Gaius would kneel at his feet, and he would feel pride at doing so.

***

Gaius, wearing the armor of a legate, was kneeling at the Emperor's feet in the center of the Serillian camp. Many soldiers were watching, and were kneeling as well. As Emperor Aulus III, son of Emperor Marcus the Conqueror, was standing before him. Gaius looked up as he knelt, and stared straight into the Emperor's piercing blue eyes. He had the famous stare of his father, the stare that seemed to look into his soul. Gaius did not look away, he kept staring. His sovereign could look into his soul if he wished.

"Gaius, son of Tiberius. Have you memorized the Knight's Oath?" asked the Emperor.

"I have, your majesty," said Gaius.

"That is good...but tradition wants you to repeat after me," said the Emperor.

"Yes, milord," said Gaius.

"I here swear fealty and do homage to the Crown of the Serillian Empire," said the Emperor.

"I here swear fealty and do homage to the Crown of the Serillian Empire," said Gaius.

"To ever be a good knight and true..." said the Emperor.

"To ever be a good knight and true," repeated Gaius.

"Reverent and generous..." said the Emperor.

"Reverent and generous," repeated Gaius.

"Shield of the weak, obedient to my liege-lord, foremost in battle, courteous at all times, and champion of the right and the good..." said the Emperor.

"Shield of the weak, obedient to my liege-lord, foremost in battle, courteous at all times, and champion of the right and the good," repeated Gaius.

"Do you understand your oath and swear to live by it, Gaius?" asked the Emperor.

"I understand my oath and swear to live by it, your majesty," said Gaius.

"Then take the sword and belt of a knight," said the Emperor as a soldier handed him a magnificent sword and the belt of a knight.

Gaius put on the belt and buckled the sword, still kneeling as he did so.

"A Knight receives a surname, and yours will be Cidellus. Will your descendants be proud to carry that name?" asked the Emperor.

"They will, milord," said Gaius.

"Then arise, Sir Gaius Cidellus, Royal Knight, and do great deeds!" roared the Emperor.

Gaius rose from his kneel, and the crowd rose as well to cheer. A man of humble origins had become a knight that day, a status they all hoped to acquire.

***

Throughout the west, there was still pockets of small resistance. They were all either crushed or assimilated, depending on how loyal they were to the futile western cause. Towards the end of the six months, Gaius Cidellus was already back in Seris, looking forward to his leave and learning to read. He was also thinking about his future. A wife and children would be nice.

Jarnas had been knighted. It took time, but he found a Duke that was both worthy of his service, and willing to take him, a hard combination to find. Jarnas was now a Knight of the Peninsula, and in charge of the fourth Peninsular legion.

The legion had been ripped to shreds during the war. In fact, it existed only on paper. There were no legionnaires and minimal non-combatants, but there was a full sized military camp.

Jarnas first task was to build an army, and that he set to with a will. The first century, fourth legion was naturally the same century that had been under Jarnas' command the entire time, the one he had risen from. They would form the core of his legion and be the trainers.

As time passed, the legions ranks began to swell. In the six months that Jarnas had had command, the legion had been restored from 0% nominal strength to roughly 50%. Jarnas then requested the ability to restructure his legion and their equipment (which had yet to be ordered) as he saw fit, before beginning to drill in earnest.

00:34:53 Mar 6th 10 - Emperor Gaius Septimus Cidellus:

[[OOC: Sorry, but every legionnaire must have the same training and equipment throughout the Empire. Once you rule your own sovereign nation, you can do as you wish. = /

And just to let you all know, a legate merely commands a legion for a General. Several legions make up an army. So Erunion...you are at the command of a General. Remember that.

Having been promoted to be a Legate of Jaskol, and a knight, Jonny was free to do as he pleased. He trained his troops fair, and as a war hero, he was recognized any where. Unlike most people, Jonny had very little problem with his past. He came to terms with what he had done, and soon after returning and being Knighted by the Emporer himself, Jonny took a bride. Her name was Alicia. Jonny took the name Bacardus, and looked forward to what he hoped was a long and peaceful life with a woman whom he loved very much.

19:21:50 Mar 8th 10 - Emperor Gaius Septimus Cidellus:

*Saturday*

Gaius was quickly put in charge of a single legion, and was often tasked with wiping out remains of the Western Army. However, flashbacks of his toughest battles often haunted his waking hours, and nightmares haunted his sleep. He tried everything, but images of dying and dead friends and fellow soldiers constantly invaded his mind.

*Sunday*

The dreams and flashbacks did not stop, and his mental deterioration was becoming obvious. His arms and chest were full of cuts and slashes, he was working towards one for each man who died under his command. He couldn't take it, it was becoming too much.

*Monday*

Gaius had many scars on his body, most of which were self-inflicted. However, his mind was healing. He had met a young woman of around twenty-five in Wednor. Her heart was kind, and her presence alone seemed to comfort his war-ravaged body and mind. Her name was Althea, and he loved her dearly.

-----------------------

Jarnas had worked hard over the past year and a half. He had rebuilt his legion from the ground up, turning a paper army into one that could be feared. During this time he had used his savings to purchase a book, "The Techniques of General Vordomor" which he was studying whenever he had time, thanking God that he had spent that year under the scholar so that he could learn reading.

His legion was not Jarnas' sole attention. With his new title of Knight, he was making an entrance into the local nobility. He was young, handsome, single and had a brilliant military career ahead of him. The only problem was that he had fought on the wrong side, and started as a common soldier, both of these things ranked him as much lower in the opinion of the nobility.

01:31:21 Mar 9th 10 - Emperor Gaius Septimus Cidellus:

[[OOC: Well, people are allowed to use leave now if they want. Each 2.5 years, or five turns, gives you six months, or one turn, of leave.

I joined the army at eighteen, and finished my training at 19.5. That means I have three turns of leave saved up.

You are given pay during your leave.

Anybody not in the army can take six months off whenever they want, and they can easily find a new job afterwards. Isn't this world nice? However, they aren't given pay.]]

In the pat two years, Jonny had done a lot with his life. He had, through his services to his country, obtained some education and learned how to read. He was very proud of himself, and vowed to keep going at this, for he wanted to become a lot better at it. However, his new wife was with child, and he wished to buy a home for the two of them.

He bought a Villa, and they settled in. At first, the only visitors they had were a few of Jonny's army buddies, and Alicias immediate family. However, word spread that the Knight whom everyone though was an imposter was much more charming then they first anticpated. By the time their first daughter, Victoria, was born, a huge party was thrown in their honor. Soon after, it was rumored that Alicia was again with child. And sure enough, only a year after his first daughter, the couple had a son, Justinos.

During all of this, Jonny had also secretly been learning how to read from a book that he had acquired. It was slow going, for he was still not very good, but he was constantly trying, and reading when ever he had free time. However, he was deeply devoted to his family, and to his command. Readingwas just a hobby to him.

Althea was healing Gaius's mind and body well, and it was noticed by his troops. Gaius obviously didn't have to sleep in the barracks with the common soldiers. He received his own quarters, with a bedroom with a double-bed, a bathroom, a living room, and a storage room. He took six months of his saved up leave and learned to read and write at the academy, as he thought it important of officers leading troops. Althea supported his decision and opinion. Gaius knew that Althea would be the woman he would marry, and he wondered when he would gain the courage to ask her. He thought it funny, in a way. He had stared into advancing hostile armies, led centuries and armies, and had received horrific wounds while doing so, but he couldn't ask the woman he loved for marriage.

Beginning Character Sheet

Name: Doran
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 180
Hair color: Blonde
Eye color: Blue
Build: Athletic
Age: 21
Gold: 10
Bio: Doran had been a farmer in Resdyn during the revolts. During them, his farm was burned down and his crops "requisitioned" to feed the soldiers. After that, he wandered for a while, begging and doing odd jobs and eventually setting up in Seris.
Description: Doran is a tall, solidly built man. Even though it may take him a while to come to a decision, once he has made up his mind, it takes an army to change it.

Post Description
Name: Doran
Titles/Ranks: Age: 21

Doran looked at the bottle in his hand one last time in disgust and tossed it into the gutter. After his home was destroyed, he had spent his time moping around the country side and what had it gotten him? A handful of gold, a beaten up shack, and a hangover. It was time to actually do something with his life. Doran had heard that the army was still short on raw recruits after the revolts a couple of years back. Surely they'd welcome him.

"Well, hello. Look what the cat dragged in" the officer sneered at Doran's disheveled appearance and wine-stained clothes. "This life isn't for you. The last thing we need to be doing is arming drunkards." Doran hung his head in shame and walked back out the door.

But, Doran came back the next day sober. And the next day. And so on for a week, Doran walked into the recruiting office and asked to be trained as a recruit. Finally, one of the officers noticed him and stopped the clerk. "Well, you've got persistence, I'll give you that, but why are you so intent on becoming a soldier?"

Doran told the officer his story, about the raid that had killed his family while he was in town, about the life he had spent wandering, and finally about wanting to make something of himself. The officer thought for a moment then clapped him on the shoulder. "You're in. However, if you ever come in drunk to training, I'm going to flay the flesh from your bones. Now, head out to the fields."

15:37:30 Mar 10th 10 - Emperor Gaius Septimus Cidellus:

[[OOC: Promotion to the rank of General automatically gives you 3 PP. Completion of a twenty-year term as General will earn you 3 more PP. I am sorry, Lanoc, but a scholar isn't a very prominent person in politics. You are making boatloads of cash though, so you could always give one of your sons a VERY good education in tactics before they join the army ;-).]]

Gaius took another six months of leave to take another course at the academy, this time using his own money to pay for the course. The course he took was in tactics and generalship. By the end of a mere six months, he passed all of the exams. He was regarded as a master of warfare, and a great leader on the battlefield. Gaius was amazed at how his life had gone...a decade ago he hadn't even been a legionnaire yet.

As soon as the course was over, Gaius was quickly promoted to the rank of General. He was given three legions to command: the eleventh, twelfth, and thirteenth legions. He now had command of three full-strength legions; a total of 18,000 men.

Now...if only he could work up the courage to ask his wife's hand in marriage.
